Chapter 13 - David

"Wait!" I said.

"What?" He hissed.

"You don't have to do this!" I called to him.

"Yes I do!" He replied viciously, "You abandoned me and my mother!"

"Please!" I cried, "I've lost everything else! Everyone else! Don't let me lose you too!"

"You made your choice dad!" He replied, "Now I make mine!"

"What do you want me to do Warren?" I shouted, "What the hell do you want from me? You wanted me to reach out and I did and you tried to ruin my marriage and despite that, I'm reaching out again and you are pushing me away to steal from me!"

"I thought I wanted you in my life! Turns out I don't!" He spat.

"Please Warren. I have just lost my wife! Don't do this!" I pleaded.

"Why do you suddenly care so much?" Warren shouted, "What suddenly changed your mind?"

"Please Warren!" I said, "You are my son!"

"I..."

"Mr Ride I'm sorry!"

We both turned to look at Miranda. She slowly walked over to me and hugged me. I stood there in shock, but I was hugging her back. I had no idea what was going on, but she seemed as devastated as I did.

"I'm so sorry for your loss Mr Ride!" She sniffed, "It shouldn't of happened to her, Alex was an amazing person."

I sighed, "Thank you."

"She offered me a job so that you and Warren could become closer and now look at you!" She screamed, turning on her husband, "All you wanted was a father figure in you life and now that you have one you are pushing him away and stealing from him!"

"What..."

"No! I'm talking Warren!" She shouted, "Destiny will not have the life she wants if it comes from stolen money! Ok money is tight but we get by and we have our family! Why isn't that enough for you?"

"It is enough!" He cried.

"No it's not!" She spat, "It never has been! This is you father for fuck sake Warren! What is wrong with you?"

"Stop it Miranda! Why the hell are you taking his side?" Warren screamed.

"Because David is my grieving father-in-law who you are treating like shit!" She shouted, "I won't stand by anymore so bloody stop or we are over because I'm staying."

"What do you mean you are staying?" Warren asked.

"I'm staying in the uk!" She said, "I took the job Alex gave me and I've just made a deposit on a house with money I borrowed from her! I'm not returning to Vegas and nor is Destiny."

"And....when....when...where you gonna tell me this?" Warren stuttered.

"When you woke up from your fucking delusion!" She screamed.

Warren stumbled back slightly. I could see in his face he was weighing up his options and replying what his wife had said. I didn't know what had happened between the two of them or what his delusions were but Miranda was furious and Warren was devastated.

"Warren!" I said finally, "You have me and you have your family. Miranda and Destiny as well as your siblings downstairs!"

"Please Warren!" Miranda pleaded, "I don't want to lose you to this."

"I....I...but..." Warren spluttered, "Why do you want to help me now?"

"Because we are family," I replied, "And I don't want to lose anymore of mine."
