1 WEEK LATER

LOLA

One whole week after inviting Ricky into my house he was being super cryptic and secretive. I thought we'd become friends, but maybe I'd done something wrong. At school he avoided me like the plague, keeping to himself along with Devin and Ryan. The only time he talked to me was when he wanted to know more about the mirror in my bedroom.

I felt like everyone around me knew a secret and were purposely keeping me in the dark. So at lunch, I decided to approach Lynn who knew a lot about supernatural stuff to see if she could help me get some answers.

Denis was sat glued to his phone while Vinny made puppy dog eyes at Ryan. Lynn looked up from her textbook as I slammed my tray down next to hers and sat down with a huff.

"Easy Lola, I know the food here is garbage but don't take it out on the poor tray."

Lynn smirks before going back to her revision. I feel someone's eyes on the back of my neck, and when I glance over my shoulder I lock eyes with Ricky who quickly looks away. I shake my head and turn my attention back to the plate of cheese fries in front of me.

"You snooze you lose Lola."

Denis grabs a handful of fries off my plate and stuffs them in his face before licking his fingers free of cheese. Vinny laughs and goes to reach for some fries as well but I slap his hand away.

"Don't even think about it, Vinny."

Vinny pouts and cradles his hand to his chest. Next to him Denis leans over and ruffles his hair, and the two start to play fight. Lynn shakes her head like a disapproving parent, she was the mum of the group.

"I'd ask them to stop making a scene Lola but I really need to study for this math test. I know for sure I'm going to fail."

A lightbulb goes off in my head as to how I could get Lynn to possibly come to my house without raising any suspicion.

"I could help you revise Lynn, I'm actually quite good at math. Do you maybe want to come to mine after school?"

Lynn's eyes light up and she squeals, "oh my god I could kiss you right now Lola if I knew you swung this way."

"Down there, girl. Now eat your lunch." I laugh and Lynn rolls her eyes.

"Yes, mum."

~End Of School~

Carrie had cheerleading practice again so Lynn gave us a ride back to mine, along with Denis and Vinny who also needed help revising for the same test. Luckily both my parents were still at work so they couldn't interrogate my friends.

I really wanted to get Lynn alone so I could ask her my questions, but first I had to help my three friends become better students. Denis and Vinny picked up my notes easily whereas Lynn struggled. Denis made a remark that she needed to spend less time with her head in the clouds dreaming about magic and the supernatural, and focus her attention on the real world which included school.

"As nice as this little study session has been I really need to get to work."

Denis packs his books away and Vinny does the same. Lynn raises an eyebrow in his direction.

"Do you also have a job, Vinny?"

"No, but he has a coffee date with Ryan." Denis chuckles and nudges a blushing Vinny in the side.

"Oh yeah, well at least I'm not swooning over a new customer who happens to be British who treats me like dirt with the occasional compliment thrown in to keep me happy."

Denis stops chuckling and glares at Vinny.

"Ben is British and they do things differently over there. Now do you want that ride or not?"

Vinny shuts up and nods timidly.

"See you girls at school tomorrow."

Denis and Vinny leave. Lynn sighs and throws her book across my bedroom.

"Thank god they're gone. Now I can ask you about this creepy mirror."

I roll over and climb off the bed and follow Lynn who walked up to the mirror and stroked the strange markings on the frame.

"Lynn can I ask you a question?"

Lynn nods, never taking her eyes off the mirror.

"Ask away Lola. Just to let you know, you're not crazy."

"Do you believe in the supernatural world and the creatures that reside alongside us?"

Lynn looks away from the mirror and smiles before reaching out a hand to pat my shoulder reassuringly.

"I do believe in everything supernatural Lola. My aunt believes there are creatures that live alongside us here in town. Now, what do you know about this mirrors history?"

I shrug my shoulders, remembering how Ricky kept looking at it when he was over a week ago.

"My mum bought it me as a gift when we moved in, but I find it kind of creepy if I'm being honest. I don't get a good vibe off it."

Lynn goes over to the bag and pulls out a rather tattered journal before flipping through the faded and yellow pages, and coming to a stop halfway through the journal.

"Do these symbols looks familiar Lola?"

Lynn hands me the journal carefully as if it would break with a single touch and as I scan over the sketched out symbols on the page in front of me, I soon realise they were identical to the ones around the mirror.

"What do they mean Lynn?"

"A spell had been cast on the mirror to keep someone or something very powerful inside and stripped of whatever power they and it possessed. The scratched symbols which look pretty recent broke the spell, freeing whatever was once inside."

I stare at Lynn. One half of me wanted to laugh and call her crazy, but the other half of me believed in what she was saying. I'd felt uneasy around the mirror since arriving and at night it felt like something was watching me sleep.

"So what do we do now Lynn?"

"My aunt Hayley is a pagan. If we can get the mirror to her maybe she can tell us what it contained. She should still be at her shop if we leave now."

If Lynn's aunt could explain everything going on in this town then I had no problem taking the mirror to her, I only had one problem.

"Lynn my mum kind of flipped when I had it covered. She'll freak out if it goes missing. Can't we take a fragment or something?"

Lynn sighs before roughly tugging at the corner of the mirror frame, managing to snap off a small section of the frame.

"Let's hope we don't need to put the thing back inside because now we've tainted the mirror past the point of no return. It's pretty much useless as a magic tool now."
