Chapter Twelve

1 WEEK LATER

LOLA

"How are you and Ryan? The two of you have been inseparable this past week. Kind of had to rip you away from him for our study session."

Next, to me, Vinny blushes, his cheeks flaring red against his pale complexion. He was smitten with Ryan and vice versa, to the extent it was kind of hard to shut him up during our study session when all I wanted to do was pass the English test next week.

"Ryan's perfect, super sweet but still kind of mysterious which makes each day exciting."

I roll my eyes as he practically jumps up and down next to me as we stroll through the local park. I hoped this would lessen some of his energy, but so far it hadn't worked and he had even more energy.

In the distance, I squint my eyes and just about make out a familiar figure and one unknown figure. Denis was sat on one of the benches along with another guy I'd never seen before.

"Look Vinny. Denis is over there? Do you know who he's with?" I ask, nudging him in the side to grab his attention.

Vinny sighs loudly, "that's Ben, I think him and Denis are together. He doesn't go to our school though. However, I do know that Ben beats him but he takes it."

I was shocked to hear that Denis was being beaten by the guy he was dating. Then again this past week he'd distanced himself from our group and kept his business to himself. I grab Vinny's arm and redirect our walk to stroll past the couple who were currently making out.

"Denis is that you? Fancy meeting you here."

Denis quickly jolts away from Ben who scowls in my general direction, okay I didn't like him so much.

"Err hi guys, what are you here?" Denis questions, slightly shocked by our presence.

Vinny shrugs his shoulders, "we were having a study session and now we're heading into town for a bit. The park was a shortcut."

Denis nods, "anyway guys this is Ben."

I wave at Ben as does Vinny. Ben fakes a smile but waves back like he just wanted us gone. Then I squint and take a closer inspection at Denis to see him trying to shield the left side of his face from us. There was something on his left eye.

"Oh crap Denis, is your eye okay?"

He covers his eye with his hand, "yeah I just walked into something like a klutz. I have been known to walk into things when I'm not paying attention."

Next to him, Ben doesn't show any sign of remorse or distress that I'd just pointed this out. If what Vinny said was true then Ben had to be the one to give Vinny this newly formed black eye.

"I'll make sure he doesn't walk into any more things, guys. But we should be going now Denis," Ben grunts, and stands up before motioning to Denis to follow him which he does like a little lap dog.

"See you later guys."

Denis shuffles off alongside Ben and the two talk in hushed whispers, which slowly fade as they get further away from us.

Vinny pouts, "I know he's in love, but Denis needs to see that Ben isn't a great guy."

I pat Vinny on the back, "we'll all keep an extra eye on Denis and intervene if things get worse. He doesn't strike me as someone who would ask for our help."

"I'll be okay heading home from here Lola. I'll see you at school tomorrow."

The two of us hug, and I watch Vinny walk after Denis and Ben towards the main entrance of the park which led into the town square. I turn on my heel and start walking the back I came. I pull out my phone and see a new message from mum of all people because she'd kept herself distant from me recently.
