"Sometimes nobody knows how things will turn out, that's why they go ahead and play the game. The game of cat and mice."
Kylie
"He what?!" I shouted on the phone. I was walking out of the school with Lynn and Ace. Ashley was squealing in a high-pitched voice through the call.
"Nick was able to set you up with Tristan tonight! Oh my god, Kylie this is going to be great-"
I cut her off and pinched the bridge of my nose. "That's great, but Ashley, I'm assuming Luke hasn't told you about anything yet. But I am really stuck in a bad spot right now."
"What do you mean?" She asked in a confused manner. Lynn and Ace shot me a look as we continued to walk across the parking lot. In fear that someone else could have been watching us, I ushered them to get in the car. Ace slammed his door shut and started his car.
Lynn sat in the front seat with him while I took the back. "Look, we'll talk more when we get to Ace's place. I'm in the car with him and Lynn now, alright? You need to tell Tristan I can't make it tonight. Come up with some kind of reason, as long as it makes sense."
"Okay. . . ." Ashley trailed off, uncertain. Her happiness was deflated. I hung up and leaned back against the seat. I rested my head on the window, the cool glass giving me a sense of comfort. Lynn stared at me sympathetically through the review mirror.
"So what happened?" She asked quietly.
"Ashley had Nick set me up on a date with Tristan, but it was really done on the worse timing ever." I told the brunette honestly. I couldn't find it in my right mind but to think that I was going to live a normal life. Could things get any worse? I sighed and rubbed a hand over my face.
"Luke is also on his way over. Lynn can you call him to make sure that he picks up Ashley from Starbucks?" Ace stated, his eyes focused in on the road as he spoke. I glanced at his dirty blonde hair before bringing my attention back outside. Ace stopped at a red light, switching on his signal.
Once the light turned green, he took a left on Marshal Street. Lynn laughed a little to lighten up the mood. "Luke already picked up Ashley. She was practically stuffing her face with the donuts from the Dunkin Donuts across the street." We all laughed for a whole two minutes with smiles on our faces.
A few moments later, Ace pulled up onto his driveway. We all got out of the car, the rain pelting down on us. "Oh crap, I should have opened the garage!" He shouted over the thunder. The blonde ran over to Lynn's side and shielded her with his coat.
I made a mad dash towards his garage and entered the pin into the keypad. Lynn and Ace managed to run inside. I closed it off when he was able to wrap his hands around the knob to the door that led to the inside of the house. We stood in his kitchen almost soaking wet from head to toe. I kicked off my shoes and left them on the mat in front of the door to dry.
Lynn and Ace followed behind me into the living room. I decided to sit on the floor and leaned against the wall. The both of them took their seat on the couch across from me. We sat in a moment of silence, taking a few minutes to calm our breathing. There were small knocks that erupted from the front door.
I peeked through the glass pane. "Oh, they're here!" I exclaimed in surprise. I opened the door and let Luke in, Ashley following from behind. We all crowded together at the coffee table.
