Clary POV
"Hello Clary" Jonathan said as I approached the table and moved to sit opposite from him. I was surprised to see a smile light his usually stoic or bitter features. I masked my shock with a polite smile in return and settled in my seat.
"Hi" I said lightly. Thankfully these encounters seemed to be getting easier, I was no longer so nervous and paranoid, I could now trust that there was no danger in these secluded meetings.
"I wanted to run through the finalized plans with you... we should be able to start in a couple of months" he said assuredly and leaned across the table to hand me his phone. My heart contracted in my chest, he was always so focused on the plan. It's like he lived for nothing else but his master plan. Even though the things he's done are unspeakable and he's far from a good individual, he's my brother and I will always wish things could have turned out differently.
On the screen was an untitled note page full of hundreds of names, the list was gradually getting larger each time we met. I scrolled through the new additions, taking in the family names. I recognized some names from our forces that I could trust and secretly hoped they would be enough in the end and my own plan wouldn't backfire.
"You think we can trust all of these?" He rarely asked for my consul with his plans but alliances were something that he trusted me with. After all, I was the one who had been among the Shadowhunters in Idris. I knew who was beneficial to our plans and could identify any potential whistle blowers.
"These all seem to be fine, anyhow, you'll be able to quell any doubt they have" I replied with certainty.
He continued to run through more things, like numbers of people, weapons and land that we would have control of. I was glad when he stressed the details, it meant that I could listen with stoic appraisal. Seeing him was less scary than it had been in the past but having to convince him of my loyalty and love for him put me on edge. I never knew when the mask would slip and he would find about the truth about what I'm trying to do, I just hoped it would be when everyone was safe or at least ready to fight...
A waitress came over at one point with drinks, he didn't seem put off by her presence as to a disinterested passerby it was as though we were discussing a pending business deal or something of that nature. I smiled politely and thanked her and he followed suit. I took a sip from my glass and smiled at Jonathan in approval. He had ordered us both a coke like usual. He always remembered that I liked it, though I never knew if he did himself or whether he just drank it for me.
"So... you're back in the New York Institute" he said casually after a brief silence. "I will miss going to see you in Spain, Italy, France..." he trailed off.
I hummed in agreement, "it's okay though. I grew up here, I missed it".
"There are no problems there I presume? No one suspects anything?" he asked.
"No, there doesn't seem to be anything. Nobody knows a thing, let's face it. You're dead to them. Quite literally" I joked, trying to avoid the subject of problems.
He laughed lightly, he seemed convinced I was doing fine.
I was wondering whether he would object to me going back there on the grounds that I couldn't lie to my old friends or maybe even Jace. Though after all the gossip about our split I doubt he was worried about me running back to him or any one of them.
At that moment my phone buzzed to life, I jumped slightly and went to apologize but he insisted I take care of it.
"Go see to them before they realize you've been gone" he grinned and rose from his seat. I did the same, checking my phone to see who I missed a call from.
A touch on my arm, brought my attention from the phone to the man in front of me. I had to crane my neck to look him in the eye.
"Take this" he instructed and handed me a phone. "Ditch it if you need to, if anyone starts looking through it or something like that. I'll call you when I need you"
"Okay, thanks" I said, slipping the burner phone into my bag. I went to walk away but his voice caused me to pause, he looked conflicted for a moment
"...and Clary" he lent down and kissed my cheek softly, "well done, you're so good"
I forced a smile and touched his arm softly, "Bye" I said simply.
I didn't even notice the walk out of the bar or the journey home. I was caught up in my feelings, an intoxicating mixture of disgust and a heart wrenching sadness.
I'm a liar, the thought echoed through my head. I took a deep breath and steadied myself. I may be a liar but I'm going to save my friends from Jonathan, even if it kills me.
