The woman looked back and forth between the boy and his mother. He didn't really pay attention the the woman since his mother and the woman seemed to be talking to each other. A couple minutes later the woman turned to him and began asking questions. She asked him where he had gotten all the bruises and the broken nose. He then looked towards his mother, who was staring him down with a raging fire in her eyes.
After seeing the way she looked at him, he remembered the day before when she had repeatedly thrown him down the stairs, which had been the cause of his broken nose. He looked back at the woman, being afraid of what his mother might do to him, he lied. He told the woman that he had beat himself and had thrown himself down the stairs. He then looked over at his mother, who had just nodded to him. He was relieved that his mother was not going to beat him in front of this woman. The woman kinda looked at him and had a weird look on her face, as if she was piecing things together.
She kept looking back and forth between the boy and his mother for another few minutes. Afterwards she began talking to his mother, so he started to stare out the window. About five minutes later the woman got up and asked them to follow her. They all walked out of the office and into what appeared to be a common room. There were kids of all ages there, ranging from his age to 18 years old. She then continued on down the hallway to what appeared to be rooms. At that time a little girl, about his age, walked out of one.
The woman introduced the little girl as Hazel, and told them that she had just recently been admitted. He recognized her as the little girl who was staring at him when he first came in. She smiled at hi!m and quickly ran down the hall. They then walked down to what looked like a cafeteria. Afterwards they came upon some rooms that were used for various things. They then made their way back to the main desk.
The woman asked his mother a few more questions. After that she needed to sign a few papers. When she was done, she took one last look at him, and walked towards the elevator. He was about to follow her so he wouldn't get yelled at, but something told him not to. He just stood where she left him. Watching as she entered the elevator. Somehow he knew that this would be the last time that he ever saw her. Tears started running down his face. He knew that he was never going to get hit, punched, or kicked ever again. No more getting locked into small spaces.
The woman saw him crying, and took him into the office. She looked at him and asked him why he was crying. All he said was that he knew he was never going to see his mother again. She went and sat behind the desk. She told him that she knew he was lying earlier, and that she wanted the truth. He immediately told her everything.
He told her about the time his stepfather repeatedly hit him just because he missed the bus. Then there was the time he was locked in a small closet for a whole day. There was the time his mother pointed a gun at him and threatened to shoot him if he didn't stay in his room. He told her all he could think of. The last thing he told her was his last birthday. Instead of celebrating it, his parents beat him.
The woman saw the sadness in his eyes, so she reached under the desk into a mini fridge. She pulled out a piece of ice cream cake and gave it to him. As he ate the cake, he remembered that his sister still had to live with his parents. The woman seemed to know what he was thinking, and she reassured him that his sister would be fine. He remembered how she would bring food to him and take him with her when she went places. The woman told him that he may yet see her again. He smiled at this and finished the cake.
She took him out to the common room to meet everyone. He just stared at the floor the whole time. He could feel the little girl, Hazel, staring at him. The woman then took him to his new room. He was so happy. The room at his house was actually just a small closet, and his bed was just a pile of clothes and blankets. This room however, had an actual bed and even a window. The woman said he could stay in his room since it was right across from the nurses desk, he just had to keep the door open. So he stayed in there, looking out the window, watching cars go by. When he turned around, he was surprised to see Hazel and some guy standing in his door.
