I raced down the steps of my beautifully designed yet empty house, shoving an apple into my backpack on the way out.
The scorching summer sun kissed my already tan skin as I covered the short distance to the car.
When I got into the passenger seat, I was greeted by an awfully loud and excited "Hey Aves" then engulfed in a rather awkward side hug.
I mean I generally find all hugs awkward, but side hugs were like on a whole new level of awkward. Don't you think?
After realizing that Leona was waiting for me to return the greeting, while I had been lost in my thoughts, I made a rather lousy attempt at being enthusiastic with a much, much softer "Hey Lee!"
She simply rolled her eyes and turned the key, she obviously knew me well enough to not get offended by my weird behavior. We've practically known each other since our good old diaper days.
While driving, she snuck a few side glances my way and then shoved her all-purpose bag(that's what I called it anyway- it had everything from makeup to clothes, jewelry to shoes and other emergency girly items) my way, she'd clearly noticed my disheveled appearance and on days such as these I was ever so grateful for the all-purpose bag. In fact sometimes I wondered if I was the reason she had this bag in the first place.
I pushed my wondering thoughts aside and got to work.
I found a hair tie and pulled my wavy brown locks into a messy bun, next I applied some light make up and finally I threw a flowery top over the white tank top and blue shorts I already had on.
As Leona pulled up in front of Luke's house, I decided to slip a bunch of random bracelets onto my hands.
I saw her eye me over approvingly and I gave a self-satisfied smile.
Leona was always stunning and put together in contrast to my bedraggled appearance .
She had long blonde hair and striking blue eyes that made her seem more like a living barbie doll.
"You look gorgeous!" I commented after finally noticing what she had on. She was wearing a purple sundress with matching peep toes.
"Lee."
"Avianna."
Came Luke's form of acknowledgement, as he slipped into the back seat.I cringed inwardly, even after all these years ,he still called me by my full name.
I doubt he knew just how much I despised it, I mean what the hell were my parents thinking? It reminded me of avian for obvious reasons. I wasn't a damn bird for crying out loud. Was I? No I couldn't be, that would be insane. Hmm... I wonder what it would be like to be a bird. Or perhaps it sounded more like aviation? Ooh... A pilot. Pilots are quite sexy.
I was a bit startled by the sound of someone clearing their throat.
Somewhere in the midst of my internal debate, about not being a bird, and sexy pilots we had arrived at school.
"We're here!" I exclaimed.
"Yeah, like ten minutes ago." Leona deadpanned.
What? 10 minutes? Wow! Does thinking really take up so much of time? Well I suppose it does... Oh crap! I'm doing it again.
Eventually I managed to pull myself out of my ludicrous thoughts and get out of the car.
But the ground felt unusually squishy beneath my feet, like it was a massive monster that found the perfect opportunity to swallow me up. I could feel myself losing my balance, my backpack fell to the ground, my arms were flailing around hopelessly and I could feel darkness invade my mind, as I prepared myself for the inevitable...
