Friends

We were friends,
Then we were lovers who vowed to love for life.

Your fingers brushed softly across my tear stained cheeks.
It was her that I was afraid of losing you to.
You pulled me into your arms,
And your heartbeat was what calmed me down,
The familiar warmth of yours was what eased the jealousy in me.

You said, "Please don't cry," and I was quiet then.
Yet as you whisper, "She's just a friend",
Something in me sank,
And I heard it broke.
