Leaving

I crossed my legs and sat in front of you.
I leaned in closer to you before closing my eyes.
And I felt your lips on mine.

We pulled apart.
You gasped in horror,
And your eyes were wide,
As you brought your hands up to my tear-stained cheeks.

Your smile turned into a frown.
You were worried sick.
Because you knew why.

But you were quiet,
You were so quiet when you said, "Please don't cry".
It sounded like a plea.
It sounded so broken.

Words from those lips sounded like a whisper.
As though the fact that I was leaving was a secret of ours.

But I wished that it was a secret.
Because we fought hard.
When they said we weren't meant to be,
We gave in all just to prove everyone wrong.

But why were they right?

And why did we let them be right about us?
