'So, Anna Murphy, tell me about yourself.' He demanded almost, yet his tone settled that down to be only a suggestion. The day before, in the garden, the conversation took a slight turn. Instead of talking about how I'm missing out because I w wasn't reading, he started asking questions about myself. Questions that I felt shy and awkward to give the answers to. I didn't know what my hobbies were or where my favourite place to visit would be, I never even thought about it. So, because of this, he convinced me to meet him in a new café that I've never been to and order something I've never tried before.
'Uh, you're going to have to be a little more specific.' I replied, my hands playing with the cup that contained my Frappuccino, not even wanting to take the first sip.
'Hobbies, for example. What Are your hobbies.' He spoke in a way that I would normally describe as douche-like to Francesca if we talked about him, but his stare and the way he held himself... those changed everything.
'Um, I told you about those. Don't have time.'
'What do you do then?' he seemed to almost nag me, to try and make me think differently.
'Study, I drink coffee. Normal coffee. Talk to friends, Work.' I shrugged, tried to think of anything interesting besides, 'I shop, eat and sleep while also annoying any human being that knows me because I'm wasting my time doing nothing of value.'
'Study? What do you study?' he pushed forward, his hands put together in a ball while his hair hung from his head and over his eye slightly.
'Uh, well. I help Francesca study, mostly.' I answered and felt a little humiliated. I am boring, aren't I? I felt a little helpless then so I just stared into my cup and the ice floating in it, and I dared myself to try it. I took a sip, but as soon as the ice touched my lips I put it down. True, the taste of the chocolate and coffee was good but that just didn't work for me, not with ice. I regretted it.
'What place do you want to visit most?' he pushed even more, sipping his own coffee with ice, that I had lost all respect for, his eyes staring strongly at me only.
'God, you like asking questions don't you?' I let my shoulder fall in defeat and my eyebrows crease, making my best puppy eyes. 'I'm not that interesting, okay?'
He stayed silent for a minute, kept staring, and then he started smirking. I was ready to ask what he was smiling at before he hugged his own elbows and leaned in very slightly and then said, 'You seem to like sunsets, don't you?'
I nodded silently and then asked, 'How would you know that?'
'Your phone background. Also you keep staring out the window as if waiting for it. This window doesn't have a great view though, sorry about that.' He apologised, and then gave into a genuine smile.
'Not your fault.' I simply said, thinking that would be the only thing I could possibly say right then.
'You walk along the beach often?' he asked suddenly, beginning with his question trivia again. I shook my head and then mumbled a small, 'Only with my aunt's dog when she comes over, but otherwise not really.'
His face lit up then, a big smile spreading across it, his eyes glistening with a spark that I hadn't spotted before, making his eyes crease up a bit. He held my stare and somehow managed to get me smiling myself. He started to shake his head while starting to chuckle as I began to laugh and ask, 'What?'
He stood up and placed his bag on his shoulder with his phone and coffee in one hand and waited for me to stand up myself. 'It's obvious isn't it?'
I shook my head, declining what he just asked, but I began smiling again.
'We're going to the beach and the pier' Before I could say no, his free hand went into the air and he offered it for me to take which kind of surprised for no particular reason. I looked up to see him already gazing at me, half a smile painted on his lips and eyes glistening, and I suddenly felt I couldn't say no to him. I somehow wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
