❝ Jealousy, that dragon which slays love under the pretence of keeping it alive❞
- Havelock Ellis
Maggie dropped down next to Ellie in the stands, an unusual frown gracing her face.
"Something wrong love?" Jane asked as they waited for the Slytherin and Ravenclaw teams to take the field. They were sitting in the Hufflepuff section of the stands for the game as Ellie was, sadly, trying to avoid Charlie, while Devon and James were playing. "I'm not very fond of the frown that seems to have taken up residence."
"Devon hates me," she muttered miserably.
"You're dating the boy she loves," Ellie said with a shrug, her binoculars gliding over the audience and settling on Charlie Weasley for a second before she realized what she was doing and yanked them down. "I'd be a bit peeved off at you too."
"She never even told us she like him though," Jane said. "We just assumed. For all we know she doesn't like him, so she has absolutely no right to be mad at Maggie."
"She told us over the summer, Jane," Ellie said rolling her eyes.
"She did? Oh whoops. Well she didn't tell Maggie, so once again I stand: she has absolutely no right to be mad at Maggie."
"I thought she would try to make James jealous," Maggie sulked, her frown becoming more of a pout. "Not avoid me."
"You're one of her best friends; she probably doesn't want to break your heart by trying to steal James," Ellie said cheering as Madam Hooch walked out, followed by the two teams. She wasn't sure which team she wanted to win.
James quickly took his place as Keeper for the Slytherin team, while Devon swung her bat -she was beater this year- around in a circle and chomped on a piece of gum, waiting for the game to start.
"She should get over my feelings," Maggie sighed as she cheered for their friends.
"Or you could break James's feelings," Jane suggested with a tiny shrug.
"I don't want to hurt his feelings," she admitted.
"Feeling suck, don't they George," a voice came from behind them and they all turned to see the Weasley twins sitting there above them.
"More than anything Fred," said the twin on the right solemnly before breaking out into a grin. They pushed their way into the group, surveying the pitch.
"Seems like it's going to be an excellent game, wouldn't you say so?"
"Most excellent as long as all these feelings don't get in the way."
"They always seem to ruin things," Fred said with a sigh and Ellie noticed his quick glance towards the Gryffindor side of the stands. "Wouldn't you say so Ellie?"
"Don't you two have some pranks to go pull," Jane asked rubbing at her face.
"Unfortunately, not today."
"Although, if you have a request-"
"-it can be arranged."
Jane stared at them for a beat before grinning. "How much would I have to pay you?"
"For you?"
"Two Sickles."
"Good, because I have a loooong list. For starters my ex-girlfriend, Annie, and then my brother and Devon next-"
"Jane, look," Maggie said tugging at her arm. They all turned to the Pitch just in time to see the Bludger Devon had hit clip James's shoulder. James was stunned as Ravenclaw was given a penalty and Devon just glared at James.
Slytherin was given the Quaffle and within minutes, they had scored and Ravenclaw had stolen it back. Only minutes later and another Bludger just barely missed James.
"Miss McIntyre!" Madam Hooch shouted, blowing her whistle. "One more move like that and you're out of the game! Do you hear me?"
Devon muttered something and nodded, swinging her bat onto her shoulder. The game continued and, amazingly, Devon did not try to hit James with a Bludger again. She did zoom down to the ground as soon as the game had ended, with Slytherin just barely winning. The rest of the players from either team followed suit and Maggie watched them with saddening eyes as Devon seemed to continue to glare at James.
None of them had much time to dwell on it, for within minutes they were being swept down to the field, ready to congratulate their friends. James's Slytherin friends, Duke and Ian, were in front of them excited that their team had won. Ian, the seeker, was holding up the Snitch, while Duke, who wasn't on the team, attempted to lift him up onto his shoulders. He failed and Ian came tumbling down, gracefully landing on his feet between Devon and James.
"Good game," Devon muttered, picking at a splinter on her broom.
"Thanks, you too," Ian said, a grin eating up his face as he contained his excitement. "You were great out ther-"
Ellie stopped in half shock, half horror as Devon stood on her tiptoes and pressed her lips against Ian's. Ian expression mirrored Ellie's own and Devon's eyes slid closed and her broom clattered to the ground. The Snitch started to flutter away and it was only saved by Jane, who snatched it before it got too far. Ian's hand reached up to touch her cheek, his own eyes finally closed. Devon chose that moment to pull away, pick up her broom, and walk off the Pitch.
Ian took a step in the direction she had gone, only to be stopped by a low whistle, an "ow, OW!" from Jane, and James clapping him on the shoulder. He was frowning, but immediately smiled when Ian looked back at him.
"What was that man?"
"I don't know," Ian said, running a hand through his curly locks. He was clearly still in shock and wanted to run after Devon. "I just-do you think she likes me?"
"No, she just kissed you for shits and giggles," Duke said, rolling his eyes. Maggie, Jane, and Ellie all exchanged looks. "Dude! Devon McIntyre just fucking kissed you."
James removed his hand from Ian's back, frowning once his friend wasn't looking at him anymore and quickly excusing himself to the locker room.
"I know," Ian said, breaking out into a grin again. He and Duke began their journey to the locker room.
