Joel closes the door then makes sure the door's locked while I watch him "What the fuck? I can't believe we did that" I say and Joel holds out a hand "Stop" he warns. "We just left her to die!" I say even louder and point back at the door "Stop. You stay close to me, we have to move" he says sharply then jogs up the stairs. I can't believe that he's perfectly okay with letting Tess die, it's unbelievable. We walk onto the balcony looking down at the main doors, "Target neutralized. She took out two of my men. Copy that. You, take out the door. You with me" we hear a soldier say, we crouch down and walk along next to the railing. "Oh my god" I cry softly when I see Tess' dead body "Tess" I whisper. I hear the door burst open and someone yell "We're through", "They're gonna be here soon" I whisper to Joel. He runs off the platform that extends from a huge hole in the side of the Capitol Building and lands into a completely different building, he waits for me as I do the same. He catches me then moves quickly towards the hallway, he walks up to a dead body that has a hunting rifle laying next to him.
"Alright c'mon" he says as we crouch behind a table. He shoots one of the soldiers at the far end on the hallway in the head, his friend starts shooting at us once he hears the loud gunshot. "Keep your head down" Joel says sternly to me. I crouch down lower beside him as Joel starts aiming at the other soldiers. "Let's move" he says after he's killed all of the soldiers, he grabs my arm roughly as we race down the long hallway, we reach a drop in the middle of the stairs so we drop down into it then quickly run behind some shelf type of thing, I look up slightly and see three Soldiers walking towards us "There's three of them" I whisper to Joel. He nods then reloads his gun, "Down that hall is our exit, I'm going to make us a path" he whispers to me then aims at one of the soldiers. He shoots them and they fall down dead, a perfect head shot. That's what scares me about Joel, he never misses, he could easily take out anyone.
"They're down there!" One of the soldier's yells. "Shit, Ellie, get behind me" Joel mutters, I do as he says, he shoots another one and nails 'em. One of them runs at me, but I chuck a brick at them just a few feet before they reached me, Joel quickly shoots that Soldier and then the last Soldier hiding behind a fallen bookshelf pretty close to us. I breathe in and out slowly, watching people die will never stop being gut wrenching. I don't know if I'll ever be able to get their images out of my head, I don't know how he could kill someone with ease "Alright, let's go" he looks at me then suddenly gets a concerned look on his face "did one of them hit you?" I shake my head and catch my breath "No, watching people die is..." I shake my head and rub my nose with the back of my hand "I'll get over it" I say. "Alright then... let's go" he says studying me for a few seconds before walking over to the exit.
Once we're out of the building Joel points over to a subway entrance "Through there" Joel says, I nod then run after him, we sprint down the stairs. "Quick, they're going down into the subway!" I hear a soldier yell, how the hell do they keep on finding us!? "Ellie, run!" Joel yells, we sprint down the stairs just as they start firing bullets at us, I jump over the ticket stands and run to the end of the hallway with the subway station on the left of me. As I walk into the subway station I see spores everywhere, I look back at Joel worriedly, but luckily he's wearing a gas mask. I see two guards walking around with bright flashlights pointing everywhere, "Get down" I whisper to Joel. I yank his arm down so we're both crouched down behind a row of seats, we listen and wait to see where they walk, I see Joel staring at me out of the corner of my eye so I look over at him "How the hell are you breathin' in this stuff?" he asks me.
I look straight into his eyes "I wasn't lying to you" I say honestly, his eyes flicker between both of mine looking for any sign to tell him that I'm lying but then finally nods, he turns around only when we hear a soldier walking close behind us. Joel jumps over the seats then sneaks up behind him, he grabs his head and smashes it into the brick wall in front of him, "Oh my god" I groan when some of his blood gets on me. That's disgusting. Joel grabs his 9mm out of the back pocket of his pants then aims and shoots the other Soldier. "Okay, it's safe" Joel says as he tucks his gun back into its pocket. We walk through the subway cart and continue on down the track, I see water a few feet in front of his, just my lucky break. Joel jumps into water as I look for a way around the water, there's a rail on the side of the runway that I can probably get across on "Hey um, I can't swim" I remind him as I climb out the window of the subway car "We'll figure something out" he yells back to me, damn how far out is he? I walk along the side of the wall until I hear Joel yell "Ellie?". I walk around one of the cars "I'm here" I yell back.
