Just when things were going well

Ash and I sat quietly at our table, smiling at each other. I probably looked like a ninny, but I didn't care. I had held hands with my crush.

"Hey Ashton!" I heard a voice yell from somewhere nearby. "Fancy meeting you here!"

Kenna.

"Oh, uh... Hey Kenna. I'm kind of busy right now, can we talk la-" Ash was quickly cut off by the smiling girl. Her hair was kind of short, her lips cherry red. She was cute.

"I was wondering if you wanted to go to the Christmas dance with me on Monday?" she asked, batting her eyelashes.

Oh, not so cute anymore.

"Uh, yeah, sure I guess." the blondy seemed hesitant, glancing at me as I stared down at the table.

"Awesome! I'll see you there!" she winked, strutting off as if she owned the place.

If I could smack the cheesy grin off her face, I most definitely would.

Ash stared at me for a moment, his crystal blue eyes intense, almost seeming to read my thoughts.

"If it makes you feel better, I'll cancel the date with Kenna."

"No, no. It's fine. You two have fun. I'll still be going anyway. Promised Mel." I smiled, trying hard not to be jealous of the girl that got to go on a date with the boy of my dreams.

We finished our lunch in silence and then decided to head back home. The flurry had become somewhat more harsh, causing me to immediately reach for Ash's hand again. He obliged, letting me hold it until we got back to my apartment complex.

And in those few moments that our fingers were intertwined, the blonde boy that I'd had a crush on for so long had been mine.

Not Kenna's, mine.
