Chapter 1 - Leaving

I knew he was coming for me and that thought alone kept me going, kept me running, but I knew there was a part of me that wanted to be caught to be his once more.

My heart clenched at the thought of never seeing his handsome face again, to never see his radiant smile as we lay under the willow tree that stood so tall and elegantly in his back garden as he stroked my hair and talked of the amazing life we were to have together.

My blood ran cold in remembrance of all the lies he told me, all the things he was probably whispering to the very girl he was to marry by the month's end.

Perhaps he could forgive me for having left under the current circumstances but I knew he would never forgive me for leaving without informing him of my "special" condition.

So early one morning I decided to execute my plan and escape from this hell hole that had once been my haven.

I had been watching the guards on patrol for weeks and found out they rotated shifts every morning at 6am and afternoon at 1pm. I decided on a morning escape because during the day I was escorted everywhere by a handmaid and 2 guards making it nearly impossible to be alone.

Grabbing my backpack which I had packed the day prior and as the guards left their post to switch out I made my way to the one place that was empty this early in the morning. That being the kitchen since the kitchen staff didn't arrive until 7:30am giving me an hour and 30 minutes to get to the kitchen and out the back door.

When I reached the back door, I began to feel dizzy as I stared at this door which would be the door that took me out of this place. I felt my heart drop and my hands become clammy. Could I really escape this easily?

In one swift movement, I opened the door and sprinted out into the woods hoping I wasn't running to my death.

My legs began to grow tired from the endless run I had found myself in but then I saw a light in the distance and I felt my heart swell with hope. I knew that the closest town to the compound was Kelzberg and it was a decent sized town so I had no doubt that there had to be some sort of bus system or maybe if I'm lucky even a greyhound.

As I became to near the town I slowed my heavy run into a light jog as to not raise suspicion. Walking through the crowded town square I noticed a woman with a suitcase who appeared to be in quite a rush, I began to follower her from a distance in hopes she would lead me to some sort of way out of this town.

After a few minutes of following her she hopped into a taxi and my heart began to race with fear realizing that I might lose her so I rushed to the very taxi she was in and hoped in.

Both her and the taxi driver gave me a puzzled look that caused me to flush with embarrassment.

The women was the first to speak "Are you going to the airport as well?" I quickly nodded a yes which I'm sure they found very strange but neither commented on my odd behavior as the taxi jolted signaling the beginning of our journey to the airport.

Arriving at the airport I quickly handed the man the money due to him and rushed to find a place to purchase an airplane ticket.

After getting my ticket, I made my way over to check in as my plane was already boarding. Giving my boarding pass and passport to the man at the desk he looked at the passport and then back at me several times before saying, "May you please verify your name and birthday" I rolled my eyes and replied Amelia White born March 2nd, 1997 anymore questions?

Clearly taken back by my rudeness he handed me my passport and waved his hand signaling me to leave.

Placing my nearly empty bag which only contained important documents and a few mementoes into a bin along with my shoes I walked through the metal detector before making my way to the terminal.

Sitting down to put my shoes back on I couldn't help but notice how worn my shoes looked and that made me wonder what I must look like after my run through the dense woods. Looking around I noticed a few people staring at me which made me suddenly feel self-conscious.

Making my way over to the nearby women's restroom I looked in the mirror and saw just how horrible I looked. My usually vivid green eyes looked dull and lifeless and my long black hair was covered in foliage and was an absolute tangled mess.

Running my fingers through my hair to loosen out the leaves and twigs tangles inside it after a few minutes of repeating the action I looked a little less like bigfoot.

Walking out of the restroom I noticed I got less attention which made me feel oddly feel slightly better about the situation I had found myself in. Taking a seat among the many other plane boarders I rested my head on my backpack hoping to get a few winks in before we arrived.

Drifting off to sleep I began to wonder what Italy would be like. Maybe I could be happy, wait correction maybe we could be happy I thought with a smile as I rubbed my flat stomach.

I hope they look like me I thought as I drifted off into dreamland.
