'Somewhere, beyond the sea, somewhere waiting for me.....'
-Bobby Darin
"Somewhere....Beyond the sea, somewhere waiting for me...." I hum under my breath, my head bobbing from one side to another along with the tune in my head. I stand, leaning against the railing on the prow of the ferry, up on the deck. The sun shines onto the sea, light bouncing off the waves, scattering in all directions. The sea is a clear cool and crystal blue, almost mirroring the perfectly light blue sky, with the odd cloud dotted here and there. The waves lap up against the side of the ferry, rocking it gently as it surges forward through the water. It's calm and serene, not many people standing here admiring the view, preferring the comforts of the ships endless facilities. But I feel more free up here. A pair of hands suddenly land on my shoulders, making me jump up into the air in shock. I turn around with my arms crossed, my eyes narrowed to face a laughing Amelia, clutching her stomach."Oh My God Delilah!" She snorts, attracting some odd looks from passer bys. "Your face!" I scowl at her.
"Amelia! You know I hate that. I mean, I could've gone overboard! Then what would've happened?" Her laughing comes to a stop, a now serious look on her face. But then the manner is lost as she shrugs.
"More shopping money for me."
I roll my eyes, hitting her arm.
"It's good to know I'm loved." I say sarcastically, turning back round so I'm look out across the sea once more. Amelia comes to railings and stands next to me, looking out across the water.
"Don't worry Delilah. I do love you. I just have a weird way of showing it." I look sideways at her, but don't say anything. I know what she means. Amelia could just be weird at times. Ever since that fateful day when everything happened and I met her, we’ve been the bestest of friends. Upon looking at her, one would judge her as a quiet girl. And she is. But inside, once you get to know her, she is just like a mad scientist, always having new ideas, bursting with pure creativeness. Even if that creativeness landed us into trouble.
"Can you believe it Delilah?" Amelia says, draping an arm on my shoulders and sweeping her hand through the air. "We are going to Paris!" She shrieks the last word and jumps up and down, clapping her hands. I laugh at her excitement.
"I know! And then, we're going to Uni."
Amelia pouts at me.
"You always have to put a dampener on everything."
I shrug.
"It's the truth though. But isn't that exciting? Going to Design School in London?! It's almost crazy we've even got there!"
Amelia smiles at me.
"Yeah. It is crazy. And it's been a long journey."
It had. I remember clearly that day when I told my parents. That particular day would be a day to last forever.
**
I knock on their study door, waiting nervously outside. It had been a week since I ran off. A week since I told them, perhaps the most dreadful news that I was not going to be a doctor. To say they had got angry was an understatement. When I had finally got back to the house, still crying, still smiling, they had shouted at me. They had shouted at me over and over again, trying to knock sense back into me. The old me probably would have crumbled at the first word, but I didn't. I fought back. They didn't expect that and sent me to my room in disgrace for God knew how long, leaving them to argue downstairs. So I just sat in my room, spinning round aimlessly on the wheelie chair, looking out of the window at the stars. I had contemplated climbing out of the window to get outside, but I wouldn’t have been worth it. Not after everything.
