Luke's pov

Both girls are scared out of their wits. I go back to the time earlier when we were discussing what to do.

~flashback~

"Hesitation means death. Protect those girls with your life. You may not wear an army uniform, but you are a soldier." He says then smiles. "I'm sorry I didn't believe you Jason." "None of that matters now. I just.... I don't wanna come home to a dead best friend." Tears fill my eyes. We hug. "You can count on me man."

~flashback over~

I have shot a gun against animals. But never humans. "But these guys are like animals. They don't care." I whisper to myself. "Luke?" I turn around to Caroline. "Are we gonna be okay?" She whimpers. I hug her. "Of course we are." I load some guns and walk back out to the living room. Miranda's asleep. I have to keep her safe from anything. My best friend is counting on me to protect his family. No hesitation. If I see one, I shoot to kill. Caroline walks out with me. I hold her hand, my rifle in the other. "Everything'll be alright." I say, kissing her hand then there's an abruptly loud knocking on the door. I jump in surprise and Miranda wakes up. "Get behind me." I whisper. She runs behind me. I walk over to the door. I shakily reack for the doorknob, fear filling me. I yank the door open and aim about to shoot but I see it's Jason. He smiles. "Glad to see ya followin' orders." He walks in and closes the door. "So what's going on?" "The colonel gave me temporary leave since Miranda's pregnant. They've got enough folks on the front line right now." I'm glad he's home and okay. We go to the kitchen and I set my gun down. "I was scared for a second thinking I was gonna have to kill someone." "At least you'd be able to." I nod worriedly, staring at the gun at his side which his hand rests against. How many people has he killed. We walk back to the living room. "Ok listen up girls, the country has issued martial law. So we don't open that door for anybody and I mean no one. Except family. Like our parents and siblings. If need be. But I don't think that'll happen. Luke lock the deadbolt. Girls I'm teaching y'all how to shoot." The girls instantly look worried. "Luke ya got the front. We're going out back." "Roger." I say, readying my weapon.

Jason's pov

I grab several empty beer bottles and cans then we go to the back pasture. "I'll train you guys on my pistol. It doesn't have a kick to it so it shouldn't be too hard." I've gone into authority mode and now I feel like the colonel. I try to shake that away. I show them how to hold it and everything and they take turns firing rounds. Luckily being country girls they get it pretty quickly. We go back inside. I take my hat off and run a hand through my sweaty hair. I don't know when we'll be able to return to normal lives.
