The Clearing

I stood in my room, smiling to myself. I threw the curtains back and let the crisp yellow light of the mid evening shine on the wooden floor.
Fall is the best season of the year, the beautiful colors of the leaves, the earthy smell in the atmosphere, the sensation of life.
Definitely the best in my opinion.
I slipped on my scarf, considering my outfit I looked ready.
There was a small knock on the door and then my brother walked in.

"Hey, Bubby. What's up?" I asked while I passed him, ruffling his hair, to my closet.

"I'm bored." He answered, patting his hair back in place, "you wanna watch Gorge with me?"

"That curious monkey? I can't tonight, Bub. I'm sorry. I'm going out."

"Did mommy say it was an okay?"

"Yep, she wants me to make friends, it's okay, nothing will happen this time." Not that he could remember what happened 2 January's ago, he was just a baby.

"I trust you, Ambs." Deuce Said. I swept him up into my arms and kissed his cheek.

"Thanks, Dee. I won't let you down, I promise."

"Are you going to see a boy?" My brother questioned. He put a hand on each of my cheeks.

"How did you know?"

"'Cause you don't like being with girls, they're not like you. They're too pink. You like boys better."

"Well, I'm going to go see both, boys and girls today. Like a little party."

"Will you bring me some cake, Ambs?"

"It's not that kind of part-" I glanced at his pouting face, "ugh. Fine, I'll pick some up for you."

"Chocolate?"

"Of course."

"Yay! Thanks you!"

"Yep." I set him carefully back on his feet. "Go start watching, I'm gunna finish grabbing my stuff."

"Okay, don't forget my cake." He reminded me as he walked out the room.
I snatched up my brown, knee high, leather boots and left the room.

WALKER

"Yeah, yeah, I'll see you later, Jonah." I said, to my now passing friend, making my way to the bonfire, I sat on one of the surrounding logs. I watched as people I knew walked by, but I wasn't really seeing them.

I wondered if she was coming, the girl who bravely said she would have taken on Daxton, I only had slight doubt.
There was something about her, the way she smiled lit everything up and the unexpected, unexplained, bubbly, waves of adrenaline sent a tickle through my ribs.

A light tap patted my shoulder. "If you keep staring into the fire like that your eyes will start hurting."

I looked into her icy green eyes, "Hey, I was starting to think you wouldn't show."

"Of course I would. Brother problems." She said, waving a dismissive hand "Sorry I'm...late but you didn't really give a time for me to show up, so..."

"It okay," I scooted down the log to give her room, "Here, sit."

She sat as she tucked a strain of yellow hair, that glowed a dull golden in the shadow of the devouring blaze, behind her ear. "My brother, Deuce, made me promise to get him chocolate cake, 'cause I wasn't bringing him to the party." She made a innocent sound at the word party, putting quotation marks into the air with her fingers, then dropping them back into her lap again.
