Mr. Kells unlocked the huge-ass lock that held the gates of Kammer together, and put the equally large key on the back pocket of his pants. He then ran to the bus driver who had collapsed near the foot of the hill. We watched as he propped the guy up and talked to him. Mr. Kells seemed to be horrified of what he was hearing, but from here I couldn’t really tell.
The bus driver must’ve gone through something bad, a crash maybe, because he seemed… I don’t know, wobbly? Yeah, the driver seemed a bit unstable, like he would collapse if he tried to stand.
Mr. Kells helped him up and slung the guy’s arm over his shoulder. Then, they started walking uphill towards the entrance to Kammer.
“Hey Jerri,” Chris elbowed me. “Do you think we should help them get here?”
“I don’t know, Chris,” I answered. “Mr. Kells seem to be able to handle it on his own.”
I have no idea why I said that. There is no way Mr. Kells would be able to handle things on his own—the driver is probably a hundred pounds or something, while Mr. Kells is just about skin and bones. Something told me that it was not safe to go out there.
About halfway up the hill, something silver and shiny fell from Mr. Kells’ pocket and tumbled a few feet down the road.
Mr. Kells sat the driver near a rock and went back to pick up the key that fell from his pocket.
Something horrible happened next.
The driver coughed up blood and started to convulse. His eyes even seemed to roll back into his head, and as Mr. Kells was picking up the key, the driver dropped to the ground.
Mr. Kells must’ve heard the thud, because he ran back to where the driver was. He set the key on the ground and tried to shake the driver back into consciousness. The driver soon rose and garbled something incoherent.
Then he tackled Mr. Kells.
Several screams from the girls, and some of the guys, were heard as Mr. Kells and the driver tumbled all the way back to the foot of the hill. When they reached the foot of the hill, Mr. Kells tried to untangle himself from the man, whose leg is now bent at an unnatural angle, but the driver caught his ankle and he fell to the ground. He kicked the driver’s head with his other foot but the driver seemed unfazed.
“Oh shit,” Lilac muttered. “There’s something wrong. There’s something wrong!”
