After their DADA lesson, the students took one last look at The Doctor, shot eachother a "what just happened?" look and then hurried from the classroom, ready to gossip about their new teacher.

"He is so cute!"

"His eyes are just gorgeous!"

"I love his style, he's so wacky! And he wears bow ties... bow ties are cool!"

Darren overheard a group of girls saying as they giggled and walked with their arms linked towards the school grounds. It was time for a break before their next lesson started.

Personally, Darren wasn't sure what to think of The Doctor. He didn't seem like he knew what he was doing, but saying that, it was probably the most interesting DADA lesson he'd ever sat through.

Darren walked out into the school grounds, crossed the springy grass and caught up with Bonnie and Joey who were engrossed in an argument. They didn't notice the other students watching them as they waved their arms, manically trying to proove that the other was wrong.

"Joey, stop being ridiculous! Besides, you have no control over who I talk to, it's not like I wanted him to put his arm around me!" Bonnie said, exasperated. She took a pause for thought. "We're not even dating for Merlin's sake! There's no need to be protective."

Joey's eyes bore into hers, he had a hold of her arm. She snatched it back and was about to storm off when a voice stopped her.

"Hey, Bonnie!" She turned around and instantly regretted it. "Can I carry your books for you?"

Justin was striding over. He was shooting her  with his smile that would make most girl's legs turn to jelly. Bonnie just rolled her eyes. Darren turned to see Joey's reaction. If Joey's eyes could shoot lazers, they totally would.

"Sod off Justin," Bonnie replied bitterly. His smile faultered a little but he didn't give in easily. Darren could understand the commotion; Bonnie was pretty with silky brown hair and bright eyes the colour of cucumber.

However, Justin didn't get a chance to persuade her as a hand landed roughly on his shoulder. He turned around to see Joey, flames might as well have been dancing in his eyes.

"Get the hint, Bieber," Joey spat. Justin freed himself and withdrew his wand.

"Jealous, Richter?" Justin said, stabbing his wand into Joey's chest and narrowing his eyes.

"Well, isn't this cute?!" Came a new voice. Everyones eyes turned to see Lauren, her hands on her hips, watching from several feet away. "Everyone's fighting over little Miss Grueson. I bet you're loving this aren't you? Attention whore..." Lauren trailed off to wait for Bonnie to snap back, but she didn't.

Darren was watching Sami, who was stood behind Lauren. Her eyes flickered towards Darren and he thought he saw a smile tug at her lips, but it was so slight he couldn't be sure.

"Leave off, Lopez," Joey said, "it's pathetic really. You, waiting on the sidelines until you see a fight brewing, then you come running out of the shadows to make it worse. Go crawl back to your little groupies and ruin someone elses day."

Lauren's pointed face became stony. Her mouth, usually stretched into an innocent smile, was sour.

Bonnie smiled at Joey, but he didn't see as his attention was back on Justin, his hand in his pocket as he searched for his own wand. It was then that Darren decided to get involved. If a duel broke out in the middle of the school grounds they would all be in detention for sure. He grabbed Joey's arm just as he withdrew his wand and yelled the incantation "Confundo!"

The spell missed widely and Lauren jeered. Joey beat Darren off his arm and things were starting to get hectic when a voice silenced them all.

"What the devil is going on here?"

Please, please don't be Snape... Darren pleaded in his head.

But it was Snape, striding over looking extremely bat-like in his long, inky-black robes swishing around him. He took one look at the situation before him and made his own conclusion.

"Detention, Mr Criss," he said.

"What?!" Joey and Darren exclaimed together.

"You too, Mr Richter. Put your wand away," Snape then eyed Lauren, who smiled sweetly up at him. He didn't smile back but smirked as he turned back to the two infuriated boys. "And 10 points from Gryffindor...each."

"Professor, Darren wasn't..." Sami spoke up, walking forwards. But she was soon silenced by Lauren who sneakily flicked her wand at Sami behind Snape's back. Sami's lips became glued together. She looked furious, but she stepped back.

When Snape had walked away Justin had already scampered and the small group of witnesses had dispersed.

As Lauren cast a final nasty look at the others, she turned to leave as well. But Bonnie flicked her own wand, muttering something under her breath. Without even noticing, Lauren had sprouted a pig's tail. Darren grinned at Bonnie and she winked back at him.

"I want to just... just, punch Bieber in his perfect face," Joey ran his hand over his crooked jaw as if rubbing it would straighten it out. Bonnie rolled her eyes, but grabbed Joey's hand and pulled it away from his face, dropping it back by his side.

"I know a few girls who think your jaw is kinda cute," Bonnie said, ruffling Joey's untidy hair.

"Seriously? Who?"

Bonnie blushed and turned away. "I.. forget their names," she answered.

The trio spent the rest of their break sat by the lake, watching the giant squid's enormous tentacles curl and dance as they arose from the glistening water. The sun was out. The air was warm. And Lauren would soon be in the hospital wing.

Darren was on a high.
