Chapter 3

LANCE'S POV

The doctor stood and moved away from her bedside. "She's perfectly fine. Maybe a little bit of memory loss but other than that nothing wrong," he walked past me to the doorway, "Oh! And she should wake up soon."

"Thanks, doc," I nodded, not taking my eyes off of Jessica. She looked so peaceful, so serene, so quiet. Too quiet.

I walked over to her closet door, which was plastered in pictures. Smiling, I looked over the happy images of Jessica and her family, Lacey, sports teams, but mostly me. I couldn't help but laugh at us; shivering in our ski jackets in British Colombia at eleven years old, and us having a splash war in my pool with Robert, Lacey, Victoria, and Jake freshman year, or us cuddled up together, fast asleep and surrounded by a mess of dress-up clothes and art supplies, on her couch as Kindergartners.

I heard her sit up quickly behind me, gasping loudly as she did. Kneeling beside her bed, I stroked her hair out of her face and layed her back down.

“Lance?” she asked, confusion apparent on her pretty face.

“Hey Jess,” I automatically smiled at her.

“What's going on?” she inquired and looked around the room. She was so cute when she was confused.

“You’re at home, don’t worry," she just stared back at me with big, innocent eyes, "I drove you back here after you passed out.”

“What? Why? What happened?” she giggled, “The last thing I remember is Robert and I talking…” her eyes squished together as she tried to remember what happened earlier.

She isn't going to like this. Well here goes nothing...

“Yeah, while you were talking to Robert, Victoria came over and asked me to help her practice her tennis serve,” I started. Okay that sounds a little bit ridiculous. I don't even play tennis! Why would V ask me?

“Tennis serve? Victoria doesn’t play tennis; she plays soccer…” she told me. This is true. She would know better than I would…

Back in sixth grade Victoria and Jessica were best friends; they played on the same soccer team, went to movies together, and slept over at each other’s houses. I forget exactly what went down but it involved a boy getting in between the two girls. There was a huge fight and lots of drama and ever since they’ve hated each other.

Girls are quite the masters at holding grudges, and fighting over stupid things. What ever happened to sisters before misters?

“I know, she says she wants to try out new sports,” I said, “Anyways, in the middle of a swing she lost her grip on the racket and it went flying...right...into you.”

Her eyes widened momentarily, then narrowed as she stared right over my shoulder.

I stood and slowly backed away.

JESSICA'S POV

My eyes snapped open and I jolted upright. Where am I?

Looking around I quickly recognized my room, and the cute teenager standing in it. What are we doing back here? Lance walked over to me, leaned me back against my pillow and gently stroked my hair back.

His eyes were so beautiful. I realized Lacey was right earlier, as his strong, deep blue eyes flashed as he looked up at me through his long, black eyelashes.

“Lance?” I asked, just to prove to myself that it wasn’t another dream.

“Hey Jess,” he said; then he smiled.
