  Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

Miles could hear a faint sound: the sound of a heart monitor in a hospital. It wasn't anything he wasn't uncomfortable with; his kidney disease brought him in here so many times he was okay with it.

Don't tell me I had another of my kidney faliures! That is the last thing I need right now! Miles thought frustratedly to himself. But then the memories hit him like a hurricane. Alya. Her dad. Being taken away. The accident. All of these he remembered, and they flowed together like a natural stream.

He opened his eyes, and saw a bunch of doctors crowded around, their eyes bulging out of their heads. Several of them held clipboards; probably diagnosing the situation.

Miles's body burned from his head to his toes. Many of his bones were in casts, and he could see cuts where glass shards had scraped him. He cried out in agony when a woman his age grabbed his legs and flexed them.

She backed off, a silent apology in her eyes. "I am so sorry, I am only a trainee here!"

He shook his head, amused by how jumpy this nurse was. "No problem. Everyone makes mistakes."

Another doctor came up to him, this one an adult with mocha-colored skin. "Sir, you were very lucky to have survived the accident. You had many casualties that could have been fatal."

Miles grinned. "I guess I can cross surviving a car accident off my bucket list!"

Apparently not getting the joke, a white-haired nurse raised an eyebrow. "Nice bucket list you got there, Mr. Lennox."

Miles laughed, but it didn't last for too long. "Do you have an Alya here? Alya Kenndrick?"

The trainee nurse nodded her head. "Yes, but she is in fatal condition right now, sir. We are going to have to perform brain surgery."

Miles writhed in his seat, the agony not being able to see Alya overweighing his physical pain. "Why? Hasn't she suffered enough?"

The mocha-colored doctor folded his hands across his waist. "If the surgery goes well, your Alya will be just fine."

  Miles swallowed. If?
