Moonpaw frolicked through a sunny meadow, the energetic breeze dancing through her soft fur. She saw a butterfly and leapt up, trying to catch it.
Suddenly, the bright green grass of the meadow turned to mist, they sky went dark, the butterfly vanished, shadowy trees solidified all around her like a cage. Moonpaw fell to the ground and glanced about her, eyes wide and ears twitching.
A black cat emerged from the darkness, pelt shimmering and full of stars. Moonpaw's ears perked up.
"StarClan!" She squeaked silently in excitement. This was great! StarClan was in her dream!!! Suddenly, Moonpaw tilted her head, watching the starry cat come closer. What did StarClan need her for? Wasn't Tornshadow, her mentor, supposed to get StarClan sent dreams instead of her?
"Greetings, Moonpaw." The starry cat purred, snapping the young medicine cat apprentice's attention back to the dream again. The StarClan tom dipped his head to Moonpaw. "You see," his voice faded from a purr into something of a worried tone. "The Clans are in grave danger."
"Danger?" Moonpaw mewed in shock, her blue eyes widening. "What do you mean? What's wrong?"
The black cat hesitated for a moment. "My name is Wiltedleaf. Come with me, Moonpaw. I will tell you more."
Moonpaw eagerly sprang to her paws, trotting after Wiltedleaf.
The starry black tom cat led Moonpaw through the darkness to a silver clearing surrounded on all sides by mist. In the middle stood a large crystal, which glowed as if one million stars were held within it.
"Wow!" Moonpaw breathed, swishing her tail and watching as the mist momentarily swirled away. "What is this place? It's amazing!"
Wiltedleaf was sitting before the huge crystal. "The Crystal of Knowledge." He mewed quietly. "It acts as a portal to your world, and it allows us to see prophecies and omens that are approaching." He turned his head to Moonpaw, beckoning with his tail for her to come and sit by him. "Come see."
Still dazed and awe-struck, Moonpaw padded over to Wiltedleaf. She sat down, looking about her, then at the crystal.
"Look," Wiltedleaf instructed the young she-cat, "As deep as you can. See for yourself the horror you are about to experience."
Moonpaw blinked, peering deep into the crystal. She saw huge claws emerge from the sky onto her Clan, and she felt herself there, the fear, the shock. The claws slashed at her and she gave a yelp of pain, although she wasn't injured. She was tossed into the river beside her Clan, the roaring waters churning her under. She gasped for air and sputtered as the water poured into her mouth. Suddenly, everything turned deep red. The water in her mouth turned salty and overwhelming. She spat it out. Blood! The river was blood! She saw the bodies of her Clanmates being swallowed by the waves of blood. She gasped as she saw one particular cat- Poppypaw, her sister. The dappled she-cat was lying in the water, the blood engulfing her frail body. Moonpaw screeched in horror, struggling over to her beloved littermate, but it was too late. Poppypaw was gone, under the blood forever. Moonpaw let out a wail as a huge wave of blood crashed down on her. She squeezed her eyes shut, letting all her fur be stained dark red, slowly falling down, down, down. This was the end. There was no hope for her. But then again, she was nothing without Poppypaw. If she were to die, she would be with Poppypaw again. Nothing could separate them. Death couldn't be too bad, and-
"Moonpaw!" Moonpaw's eyes burst open to find herself back in the medicine cat den. Her mentor, Tornshadow, loomed over her. "You're screeching like badgers are attacking! Honestly, Moonpaw, quiet down! You'll wake the whole Clan!"
Moonpaw stood slowly. "Sorry." She mewed groggily, remembering the dream. Beware the cat with the fire within, for by the unsheathed claw of a twisted destiny the rivers will run red with the blood of all the Clan cats.. Moonpaw heard the voice of Wiltedleaf in her head.
