"Hey! Mommy! Why won't Shadedkit open her eyes already?" A small, brown, gray, and black she-kit mewed to Echostep, her orange eyes gleaming.

"Give her time, Rosekit!" Echostep purred. Another silver and white she-kit popped up over her mother's shoulder. "I've already opened my eyes!" She announced triumphantly, blinking her ice blue eyes.

"Yes indeed, Silverkit!" Echostep purred, pawing playfully at her silver daughter.

The gray and black she-kit finally burst open her eyes. "Woah!" She mewed, stumbling clumsily backwards into Echostep. "This is... Weird." She turned to face her mother. "What color are they?" She demanded, pawing at her.

"Oh! They're violet! Well done, Shadedkit!" Echostep praised her daughter, purring as she gazed at Shadedkit's violet eyes.

Shadedkit tilted her head, blinking. "Mommy, I don't know what a violet is." She mewed, pawing at Echostep again.

Echostep laughed. "Well, Shadedkit, you'll learn. They're very pretty, and extremely rare." She purred.

"Ooh, I'm special!" Shadedkit announced, blinking at her sisters.

"Well, she sure is special." Rosekit muttered to Silverkit, leaving the silver she-kit giggling.

"Hey!" Shadedkit mewed sharply, pouncing clumsily onto Rosekit.

Rosekit squealed in delight, pawing playfully at her sister. The two tumbled around the nursery while Silverkit laughed.

"Mommy, one day, I'll be the best fighter the Clan has ever seen! Nothing's gonna be able to defeat me!" Silverkit announced, swishing her small tail happily.

Echostep purred. "I bet you will, Silverkit."

Silverkit glanced up as Foxkit and Breezekit bounced over to her.

"Hey, Silverkit! 4 moons 'till our apprentice ceremony!" Foxkit boasted, puffing out his chest proudly.

"I'm gonna be the best apprentice ever!" Breezekit sang. "Froststar'll see that I'll be the best warrior ever! Maybe I'll be the leader someday!" She stared at Silverkit, eyes huge with excitement.

Silverkit bounced up to her paws. "You think you'll be a good apprentice and warrior? Just you wait 'till you see me!"

Silentwish padded over from her nest, eyes gleaming in amusement. "Come on, Echostep." She mewed, "we need some time off. Let's go hunting together. I got Poppypaw, Ruddypaw, and Bronzepaw to watch the kits as extra duties." She laughed as she dashed out of the den.

Echostep gave Silverkit a quick lick on the head. "I'll be back soon." She purred, then raced out of camp. "Wait up, Silentwish!" She laughed, her voice fading.

Gingerpool lifted her head momentarily, then yawned, glancing at her kit-swollen belly. "The apprentices should take good care of you." She plopped her head back down and began snoring loudly.

Shadedkit and Rosekit trotted over to Foxkit, Breezekit, and Silverkit.

"Hey, Foxkit!" Rosekit squeaked. "I be the leader, you be the fox attacking the camp!"

"I'm always the fox!" Foxkit complained.

"You look like one, so you have to be one." Rosekit announced, flicking her tail in satisfaction. "Breezekit is my deputy. Her name is... Breezetail, Shadedkit is Shadedfur, and Silverkit is Silverpool." She nodded proudly at the names she had made up.

"Okay, Rosekit!" Breezekit squealed.

"That's Rosestar to you!" Rosekit laughed.

Foxkit rolled his eyes, then charged at Rosekit. "She-cats fight like elders!" Foxkit muttered. "It's too easy to defeat you." He pounced at Rosekit, who kicked him with as much force as she had in her fragile little body. Breezekit launched herself at her brother.

"Remember, the foxes always lose!" Breezekit chirped.

Rosekit grinned, then looked at her sisters. "Silverkit! Shadedkit!" She called to them. "Help me fight off the fox!" Silverkit rushed into the fray, excitement tingling her pelt. Shadedkit stayed in her spot, crossing her eyes to try to see the color.

"Violet..." She murmured, lashing her tail in annoyance as she could not see her eyes.

Three apprentices padded through the entrance to the nursery.

"Five... Kits..." Bronzepaw mewed flatly, eyes heavy with exhaustion.

"Just wait 'till you have kits of your own!" Poppypaw laughed. "My mom always said us kits were definitely a pawfull, but that raising kits was worth all the exhaustion in the end." She flicked her tail proudly at her speech.

Ruddypaw giggled. "I wonder who's gonna be the special she-cat." She mewed mischievously to Bronzepaw, glancing at Poppypaw.

"Ruddypaw, shut up." Bronzepaw mewed, not even looking at his sister, trying to hide his embarrassment.

Poppypaw just giggled and walked over to the kits. "What's this mess? Fox Attack?" She flicked her tail. "Come on, let's play MossBall!" She snagged a piece of moss in her claws and tossed it in the air, laughing as all five of the kits lunged for it. She glanced at Bronzepaw and Ruddypaw, beckoning them over to her. She wadded up some more moss and tossed it again, smiling as Shadedkit leapt up and gripped it in her jaws.

"I got it!" Shadedkit squeaked. "I got the moss ball!" She pranced around the nursery triumphantly.

Suddenly, a white and gray she-cat burst through the entrance. "Poppypaw!" She gasped, eyes flickering in relief as she saw her sister.

"Moonpaw! What happened to you? You look like you just ran from here to the Twolegplace and back!"

Moonpaw licked her chest fur self-consciously. "Er... Sorry. It was just a dream." Her eyes clouded for a moment before she shook her head. "It was nothing. But just... Don't fall in the river, especially if it's red." She backed out of the den, embarrassment in her blue eyes, and disappeared.

"Great StarClan!" Poppypaw breathed. "She's insane, isn't she?"

Silentwish padded back into the den, carrying a plump fish. Echostep followed, a water vole and a fish in her jaws.

"Foxkit, Breezekit!" Silentwish said. "Have some fish."

The older kits ate the fish, while Shadedkit looked up expectantly at her mother. "I want fish!" She announced.

"Silly paws!" Echostep laughed. "You just opened your eyes today! In a few moons, you can have real prey.

Shadedkit sighed, glancing jealously at her den mates, the padded back to her nest. "I don't wanna wait a few moons." She muttered to herself, curling up in the nest. "I want fish... Now! And I wanna know what violet is!" She closed her eyes.
