Silverpaw opened her light blue eyes, blinking the sleep away from them. She yawned lazily and stretched, her back paws kicking Rosepaw, behind her. Her sister lifted her head, orange eyes dull with sleep. She gave an irritated grunt and pushed Silverpaw's paws away from her face.

Silverpaw stood, shaking out her silver tabby and white pelt, and gave an annoyed look at her littermate before padding out of the den. She was going on the dawn patrol today, and Goldenlight was already awake, calling together the cats for the patrol, her soft golden fur outlined with dawn's lazy gray glow, her pelt ruffling against the cold breeze. She turned to look at Silverpaw as she neared her, and dipped her head.

"Come along, now. Mossysplash is resting, so you will patrol with Bearface, Bronzeheart, Timberblaze, and I." The ReedClan deputy waved her tail, and the three toms padded over to her. Then she nimbly leapt off of the rock she was sitting on and started toward the territory, the other four cats following. Silverpaw trotted up to her, her paws tingling as they brushed the chilled forest ground.

"We'll head to the FireClan border first. They've seemed rather... strange recently, I think." Goldenlight meowed to her patrol, veering toward the right and hopping nimbly over a tree.

Silverpaw tilted her head, scrambling after the golden-furred she-cat. "Really? How?"

Goldenlight shook her head. "It's nothing, I'm sure," she meowed, "but GrassClan and FireClan seem to be clashing a bit. Of course that doesn't involve us."

Bronzeheart trotted to keep up. "If only we knew what was wrong," he commented, swishing his tawny tail. "Every cat seems so mysterious about it, ever since that Gathering..."

"Oh, there's nothing wrong." Bearface joined the conversation, his muscles rippling under his shaggy brown pelt as he walked. "GrassClan cats are cowards. They started yowling about that good-for-nothing FireClan medicine cat taking something last Gathering. That little mouse-brain wouldn't do any harm; he just-"

"Let's stop arguing, please. " Timberblaze mewed, casting a warning glance at Bearface. "The Clans are at peace right now, and a medicine cat apprentice would never break that peace. After all,-"

"Wait!" Goldenlight interrupted him, halting and lifting her tail to signal the others to do the same. She tasted the air, and Silverpaw, wondering, did the same.

Suddenly, the stench of FireClan swamped her mouth and nose. She blinked, glancing up at Goldenlight, who was bristling. The three toms beside them were in the same state, their pelts bushed up to twice their size. Bronzeheart, the youngest, gave a yelp.

"Some cat's been here!" He said.

"We're not even close to the border yet!" Goldenlight hissed, her back arching in fury. "This was no accident! If FireClan wants a fight, let them have it!"  Her eyes flickered  across her patrol, helplessness flashing for a moment in their green depths, before determination clouded her gaze. "Okay, Timberblaze, Bearface, and I will track where this cat went. Bronzeheart and Silverpaw, go tell Froststar."

Silverpaw nodded obediently, a queer excitement spreading through her paws. Bronzeheart whipped around and pelted back toward the camp, Silverpaw stumbling after him, barely managing to keep up.

As the two cats skidded into the camp, more cats were awake and were milling about, sharing tongues or eating prey. Silverpaw stood, panting, at the mouth of Froststar's den as Bronzeheart padded in.

A few heartbeats later, Froststar stepped out, eyeing Silverpaw.

"It was only one cat, though?" The fluffy white cat rasped.

"Yes." Bronzeheart answered simply. "But the scent was well into our territory."

"Well, see if it's still on ReedClan territory, and if not, we'll just wait to see if it comes back."

"Yes, Froststar." Bronzeheart meowed, turning and walking back out of his leader's den.
