"Where are we?" i sighed getting out of the car after what felt like an eternity. We'd been driving for almost three days. I felt stiff, like i would never stand straight again.
"Our new apartment," Grahm laughed at me. He was my brother and now my only remaining family. He looked like dad, tall and broad with shaggy brown hair and smiling green eyes. He had dimples in his cheeks when he smiled.
"This tiny little place is our apartment?"
"Calm down Emmy, it'll be fine." He rubbed my shoulder gently and handed me my bag and swung his over his shoulder. "Let's go look at it." He pulled his keys from his pocket and began jogging up the stairs.
I sighed and looked at the building in front of me. It was all stone and gray with three floors and awkward balconys that didn't seem to be up to code. Taking a deep breath i followed my brother up the stairs to the third floor and into room thirteen.
It was a small apartment the kitchen directly in front of me when I walked in, the living room to the right and a small hallway past that. I walked over through that to find two bedrooms and a large bathroom. I walked into the bedrooms picking between the two. Only one had a window.
"I call the room with a window!" i called dropping my bag on the bed.
"Oh come on Emmy!" I laughed as i walked back out, he was standing in the kitchen looking at the broken appliances.
"You want shopping duty or unloading?" Grahm looked at me over the counter.
"Well there is a problem with that," i laughed. "We only have one car now." He pursed his lips and pointed at me.
"You have a point," he laughed at me. "Double team it?" He held out a hand for me.
"Double team it," i laughed. I slapped his hand as we did our childish handshake. He laughed with me and we went to work. Box after box we unloaded and soon enough the car was empty and we were starving.
"Dinner than shopping?" Grahm asked. I nodded and wiped sweat from my brow. "We should change first."
"And maybe a shower," i laughed. Grahm nodded and we stood. "I call shower first," i yelled racing into the bathroom. Grahm sighed in annoyance but walked away anyway. I gathered my things for a shower and hopped in turning the water to a nice cool temperature. I was hot so this felt great.
After my shower i changed into a pair of jean shorts and a plain t shirt. I braided my long curly red hair to the side and lined my green eyes with eye liner. I was almost done when there was a knock on the door.
"I got it!" i yelled even though Grahm probably didn't hear it. I walked over to the door and pulled it open, the peep hole was in desperate need of a cleaning. The person waiting outside was tall and extremely thin. His hair was ragged standing at all angles, his eyes sunken in and ringed with black. He was jittery and biting his nails.
"Is-is Jay here?" he asked his voice shaking even more than his hands.
"No," i said.
"W-when will he be back?" the man asked.
"I'm pretty sure the guy who lived here is gone and probably not coming back," i said. "Please it's time for you to leave."
I tried to shut the door but he slammed his hand against it stopping me. "I-i really need him," the man said.
"He's not here!" i yelled. I forced the door shut and leaned against it catching my breath. Who the hell was that?
"You ready?" Grahm asked walking into the room. I jumped and looked at him. "Whoa you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."
"There was some weird guy outside," i breathed. "Kind of freaked me out but I'm okay."
"Let's get food," Grahm laughed. I nodded smiling. Grahm opened the door but the guy was gone. We made sure to lock the door before we headed out to dinner.
We talked and laughed through dinner before we went to the store to go grocery shopping. It took hours to get everything we needed but it was fun. We loaded everything into the car then loaded everything into it's rightful place in the house.
"Now that was a productive day," Grahm smiled at me. We were sitting on the couch staring at the blank TV since we still didn't have cable.
"An exhausting day, I'm calling it," i laughed standing up. We hugged goodnight and i went into my room. I pulled my blanket and pillow from the garbage bags and dropped them on the bed. I changed into an extra large t shirt that used to be my fathers and crawled into bed.
