I HAVE BEEN GONE FOR SO LONG HI FRIENDS
I apologize for my absence, ive been super duper busy these past few weeks haha
And lve made the executive decision to scratch my RAW/SMACKDOWN weekly reviews as i will be starting school soon and i wont have the time.
BUT, at the end of each month i will put in my two cents and say if either there have been better Raws or Smackdowns out of the month! Keep watch for those, I want to know everyones opinions on which show they prefer!
With that said, in my opinion Smackdown is taking the win right now for me. The first Raw was great, but its slowly feathered and Smackdown has seemed to be consistent:) What do you guys think?
NOW. ON WITH THE TOPIC FOR TODAY: THE WOMENS EVOLUTION.
So tonight after Smackdown and Talking Smack on the WWE Network, a WWE 24 special comes on, shining light on the Divas Revolution/Womens Evolution. I highly suggest you guys watch it tonight (if you are subscribed to the WWE network) it looks like its gonna be great!
I thought it would be fun to give some of my opinions on the Womens Evolution not only last/this year, but the changes in Womens Wrestlimg throughout the years.
FIRSTLY, for a while, in the 2000's especially, the womens division was not strong at ALL. You had women having bra and panties matches, pillow fight matches, bikini matches, SANTINO MARELLA WINNING THE 25TH ANNIVERSERY DIVAS BATTLE ROYAL WHEN HES A MAN (the disrespect) etc. I lot of the division literally consisted of not wrestlers, mODELS. Granted some of them could actually wrestle (a few) no one could break the silly mold that a woman, NOT DIVA, WOMAN, wrestler was all looks and body with no skill. These women literally defined Ruthless Aggression era in the worst way.
People don't give enough credit to the women who were the backbone of the division in their time, and wasn't hand picked because they had 'the look' ; Lita, Jacqueline, Molly Holly, Mickie James, Michelle McCool (a stretch), Beth Phoenix, Melina, Gale Kim, and of course, Natalya.
2010-2014 for the division as a whole had only changed the slightest bit, there were stand out talents on the roster like AJ Lee, Beth Phoenix, Kaitlyn, Natalya, Naomi, and Paige (my opinion)
In my honest opinion, the first spark of a turn around in the division was when AJ Lee was joined the company. She was shorter than a majority of the women, she was fairly small, she didn't look like the average 'diva' and it was exactly what the division needed.
She had the charisma, she had the drive, and she had the skill. Her best run with the company was when she wasn't shoved into storylines with half of the male roster, and she brought something so different to the table. I will NEVER forget the pipebomb promo she did, running down the whole division and it was brilliant because it was the TRUTH. That was really even the first time in recent years a women handled the mic THAT well.
I also applaud Triple H for having a proper vision on what a womens division is supposed to look like down in NXT. Paige and Emma were really the stepping stone forward for the 'Divas Revolution'. The match the two put on for the NXT Womens Championship was great. Probably one of the bigger stepping stones in cementing the 'Divas Revolution' seeds.
When Paige came over to the main roster her debut was great. Her and AJ work excellently together, they really worked the division that whole year. 2014 was when we saw AJ lose the title to Nikki, her just coming out of that (god awful) sister betrayal angle.
Early 2015, or just 2015 period was such an up and down year for the Division good grief. We had Nikki's reign, it wasn't necessarily terrible because she was a good enough heel, it's just we got tired of the Bella's, Her series of matches with paige were a bit lackluster because we ultimately knew the ending, and not a whole lot of the divas were really given a fair chance at the title.
Thank GOD they brought up Sasha, Backy and Charlotte the way they did because the division desperately needed it.
And of course down in NXT, the division was tearing the house down. Bayley and Sasha's matches were incredible. Those two made it known that when it came to Womens wrestling, if you gave them the time and a great storyline, it easily does wonders.
As for the main roster, I wished they hadn't thrown all the women in tag matches so many times where i got old fast. After PCB broke up and Nikki lost the title, the division hit YET ANOTHER low. Paige and Charlotte's fued was lackluster and so were the matches, Nikki was out with injury, Brie and Foxy were pretty much irrelevant, they didnt know how to use Tamina and Naomi properly after Team BAD broke up, itvwas all in shambles.
The whole idea of pushing 'The Divas Revolution' for months wasn't even affective. It built up the expectations for better and creative got lazy, and totally didn't give a shit and you could tell.
2016 has so far been a good year for Womens wrestling. Becky and Charlottes feud was really good, and that was rhe start of the division getting back on track. The Royal Rumble being a prime example of a positive turn in the division.
Also in NXT. There wasn't one weak length in the womens division. You had Bayley, the top babyface, Asuka, who's crazy fucking talented, Carmella, who's in ring skills and charisma has improved bounds, Nia Jax, who was wonderfully built to be this instrument of pure destruction, Alexa Bliss, who's such a great heel, etc. Bayley vs. Asuka and NXT Takeover was brilliant. Fucking brilliant.
Wrestlemania was definitely the peak of change. The Divas Championship was retired (THANK U GOD) and the Womens title was rightfully brought back. That night we saw 2 WOMENS matches, the first one wasn't too bad but the triple threat, which was one of the main events, was ABSOLUTELY GREAT. Those three were THE BACKBONE of the division and they put on a damn show. I enjoyed the Triple Threat more than the actual 'main event' which said a hell of a lot.
After Wrestlemania, the division did slow down a bit, Nattie and Charlotte's series of matches not really doing much of anything (BUT PISSING ME OFF), Brie vs. Charlotte not really doing much of anything, Charlotte turning on her dad however did really cement her place as one of the companys top heels. Dana Brooke being called up with Emma to fued with Becky but Emma was out with her back injury, Becky and Dana's feud being scratched, Dana becoming Charlotte's protogé (which made no damn sense but i digress because it worked in the long run), Brie retiring, Nattie turning heel, Paige going outvwith an injury, Naomi filming a movie.
BUT THEN. BUT THEN.
Sasha comes in and SHAKES the division. LIKE. WHAT THE FUCK.
Charlotte vs. Sasha one of the best things coming out of 2016. These two feuding felt big. With Sasha out of the picture for a little while, it made it all the more worth waiting for her to get her hands on the title.
And worth the wait I was right, because Sasha winning the title on Raw was one of the best recieved crowd reactions a woman in the company has ever gotten for a title win, PERIOD. The match was wonderful, and it showed once more with time and faith, you get a product of something just pure great.
The womens division throughout the years has changed tremendously. It went from Women being looked at just something to bask at with models and sexist stipulations, with no one being able to take them seriously, to women being looked at as WRESTLERS. SUPERSTARS. Not DIVAS. Not sex objects for men to google their eyes at. Wrestlers.
And I think it was the best transformation they could've ever done.
SO, THATS IT
AND MY SUMMERSLAM PREDICTIONS WILL BE UP SOMETIME BEFORE SUNDAY SO KEEP WATCH FOR THAT!
