Genji X Reader: I Will Protect You

Another day, another mission. Well, this mission was a little different than most.

You and a few others were charged with taking on the Los Muertos gang right on their home turf. The battle was going well enough; Fareeha, Genji, and 76 were doing most of the fighting, while you, Reinhardt, and Mei were making sure the civilians got away from the conflict safely. 

Just as the last of the civilians got away, Reinhardt yelled, and a sinister-looking guy with a rocket launcher jumped out of his hiding spot. He fired, and the missile screamed towards you. At the last moment, Mei put up an ice wall, but the missile shattered it. The force of the explosion knocked you off your feet, and you barely had time to get back up before another one smashed the building right beside you. It began to collapse. 

Reinhardt shouted for the rest of the team to get back here, and he knocked away a piece of debris with his rocket hammer. The rocket guy was knocked off the roof by Fareeha, and they focused on the collapsing building. 

Genji rushed towards you, picked you up, and carried you safely away from the devastation. 

"Are you all right, yūjin?" He asked. The light coming off of him illuminated the area around you.

"I'm fine, thanks to you," you reassured him. Just then, a sudden pain hit you, and you looked down to see a large chunk of wood stuck in your lower leg. You gasped.

"What's wrong?" Genji looked, and saw your injury. 

"I don't think I can walk." He could hear the worry in your voice and attempted to comfort you. 

"Do not worry, I can carry you." He lifted you up, and you put an arm around him. You felt safe in his arms. "I will protect you. I promise." His words echoed in your mind as your vision faded to black.

A month passed. Your leg kept you out of action for most of it. That was your good leg, too, so you were pretty upset about it. 

When you had woken up, Genji was there, and he explained that everything went mostly well. Los Muertos had gotten away once again, unfortunately, but he said that they would be dealt with soon. 

He stayed by your side during the time you were in bed, and made sure you were comfortable. When you finally got out of bed, he was overjoyed. 

Genji continued to stay with you during your recuperation period. You had tea with him every day and joined him in his morning meditation. All in all, he helped you relax a bit more. You always were a bit happy when you spent time with him.  But he seemed somewhat restless.

One day, as you two were drinking tea together, you thanked him for his kindness. 

"Anything for my closest friend," he replied. 

"How's Hanzo?" You asked, hoping to get some conversation out of him.

"Bah, he refuses to even speak to me nowadays." He set his cup down. "I do not understand why I bother with him." 

"I'm sure he cares, in his own way." You offered. This answer seemed to please him.

"Perhaps," he said, "but that's the way he is." 

The room was silent once more, punctuated only by the sounds of the tea being sipped. 

"Are you okay?" You asked, and took another sip of tea. It was a moment before he responded.

"I apologize, Y/n, I've been... somewhat distracted as of late." You raised an eyebrow. "I was scared, the other night. When I saw that building coming down on you, I..." He paused. "...I just don't know what I would have done with myself if you had perished in that fight." 

"Hey," you replied as you took his hand, "don't think like that. I made it out, and all I got was a busted leg! And, I must admit..." You turned your head away. "I thought it was very brave of you to come after me." 

"Y/n, your cheeks are red." His comment broke the extended silence after you had spoken. You whipped around to look at him. 

"What?" You looked over at the mirror, and your cheeks flushed even more. Genji laughed. 

"You are very cute when you are flustered!" He chuckled, and you turned your head away from him. 

"How dare you laugh at me while I'm in this condition!" You pouted. "You had better apologize!" 

"Well then, my little suzume..." Looking back, you saw that he had approached you rather quickly. "...how's this?" He kissed you on the lips, and your eyes went wide. They soon fluttered closed, and your arms wrapped around each other. 

After a tender moment, he let go. You gave him a smile. 

"That's a good apology." You concluded, as he scooped you up and carried you to the garden for meditation.
