We walk further than planned. My neck hurts from my head on Devon's shoulder the entire time, my legs hurt from walking, and my toes hurt from the snow. Pain is all I can feel now.
It's getting darker every half hour. The sun is practically down. I see some lights come into view and my heart skips a beat.
"Devon?" I tap his shoulder with excitement. "Oh my god. Devon! Lights! We must be near town!" I squeal with excitement. The pain I feel is gone, replaced with excitement and hope.
We run towards the lights as a small gas station comes into view. You can tell it is run down, there is rust on the gas pumps and around the bottom of the walls on the store. The sign 'open' is turned off. My heart drops and my body continues to freeze.
Devon leaves my side and looks through the windows. "Someone is in there." I begin to move next to him, "Stay back. They might be robbing the place."
"How would you know that?" I ask crossing my arms.
"There is no car in the parking lot. so they either walked to work, in the middle of no where might I remind you. OR they are robbing the place." He explains. I sigh and look around.
The door opens and I get knocked over. Devon had bounced back to where I was. I get up and brush the snow off my bum. "Now my bum is going to be wet." I mumble.
"Hey." A smooth voice says, I look up towards the owner of the voice. A young boy, probably about Devon and I's age. He has brown hair and blue eyes, his lips curled slightly to the corner of his mouth. He had a brown heavy jacket, perfect for the current weather, his jeans were dark, I couldn't tell if they were blue or brown from so much dirt. He was cute, attractive maybe...but not my type.
"Hello." I look him up and down. "Were you stealing?" Devon is the first to ask the questions.
"Why are you two here?" He smirks at me and winks. I ignore it and speak up. "Answer the question." I tell him. "You first, beautiful." He looks me up and down and I cringe. "Dude, watch it." Devon steps in front of me.
"Who's this, princess? Your boyfriend? Bodyguard? Should I be worried?" He chuckles and I roll my eyes. "Just answer the fucking question." I say, Devon raises an eyebrow.
I don't usually swear, but this kid looked tough, and I wanted to look the part.
The guy sighs as if he lost the battle. "Yea."
"'Yea' what?" I step out from behind Devon's shoulder.
"Yea, I robbed the place." He says simply. "You guys got anywhere to go?" he asks.
"No. But-"
"Come with me." he cuts me off.
"Both of us?" Devon cuts in.
"I was just hoping for the girl-" he comes closer towards me.
"That's what I thought, that's never going to happen." Devon shields me again. I push him off. "Fine." I get closer to him.
"Perfect." he smirks. Devon looks as if I'm crazy.
"But. You take Devon too." I begin to negotiate.
"Who, this douche?" He chuckles at my negotiation.
"Then sorry, I can't." I simply step away.
"Fine fine, I can't leave you here it's freezing. And you won't go anywhere without your boyfriend, so let's go." He rolls his eyes and grabs a bag full of the groceries he had stolen.
"He's not my boyfriend." I grab a bag and start walking.
"She's a handful ain't she?" he mutters. "Yup." Devon smiles.
