Chapter 7:
It had been hours, and Skye couldn't move away from her. She couldn't move away from Lauren. They all had brought her and Alex to lay next to each other, and Skye just couldn't move away from them. It was a reminder that they should have left the area when they had the chance.
"Skye... We need to cover them," Brandon said to her gently.
How could she do this to her two of her best friends?
-Flashback: Meeting Lauren-
"Alright class, we have a new student. Meet Skye Rutledge," the teacher says. "She moved here all the way from Florida, so let's all give her a warm welcome, okay?"
Skye scans over the class. It was her first day, and her nerves were shot. The shaking wouldn't stop at all, but she tried her best to hide it.
"Just sit next to Lauren, okay? Lauren, raise your hand."
A petite girl with brunette hair raises her hand and smiles at Skye. Skye smiles back and takes the empty seat next to her. The teacher continued to give her lecture. Her voice seemed to leave Skye's ears, as the girl taps Skye on her shoulder. She looks at the one that the teacher called Lauren, and she smiles.
"Nervous?" she asks, and Skye lets out a breath.
"You have no idea."
Lauren chuckles. "It's okay, everyone here is usually pretty cool." She smiles. "Would you like to hang out at lunch?"
Skye smiles, her nerves going down. "Sure."
-Now-
She would never see that smile again. She would never hear her laugh, or her jokes, or her voice. Skye would never see Lauren's smiling face again. It would only be a memory.
She looked at Alex's body, wishing this was the same situation as the avalanche. Wishing that for a moment, he was only unconscious. Of course, that would never happen.
-Flashback: Meeting Alex and Ingrid-
"Alright, we're going to have to partner up for this project, everyone." Skye immediately looked at Lauren, who looked back. They had become fast friends.
"Ah, don't get too excited now. I'm choosing your groups." A series of groans filled the class.
The teacher continued to read off the names and Skye waited for her name to be called, anxiously. She hoped Lauren was in her group. She wasn't able to talk to anyone else without her around. Talking gives her anxiety.
"Skye, Ingrid, and Alex..."
She looked around, not knowing who those two were. After a while, everyone started to get in their groups.
A blond haired boy and a petite brown haired girl came up to Skye's table and they smile.
"Are you Skye?"
Skye simply nods, feeling her anxiety kicking in.
"Great," the blond haired boy says as he pulls up a desk for himself, and the girl does the same. "I'm Alex, this is Ingrid."
Skye smiles, "Hi."
And so, they get started on the project. It seemed like they were trying to get Skye to talk more about herself, but she just couldn't do it. There was a lump in her throat that meant she would cry if she spoke.
The bell rings.
Alex and Ingrid stand up and they smile at Skye. "Come hang out with us sometime, okay? We'll get you to talk. Somehow..."
