Chapter 8:

"Skye," someone is shaking her.

"Skye, wake up." Who?

Skye opened her eyes. When did she fall asleep? Skye turned around and saw Bree looking down at her.

"Hmm?" Skye stretches, and rubs her eyes. "What?"

"We can't find Brandon."

Not again.

Skye yawns, and sits up. "He's not in his tent?"

Bree shook her head. "He decided to stay up later last night, in case you woke up. It looked like he never went in his tent."

Skye blinks. "Hmm..." she gets up from her spot on the floor and stretches. "Let's go find him then."

"Are you okay to go walking?" Bree asks.

Skye nods. "I'm fine..." she was not fine. She was anything but fine, but she had to be.

"Let's go."

Bree nods. "I'll get Ingrid."

---

When the girls were ready, they set off to find Brandon.

"Where do you think he is?" Ingrid asks.

Skye shrugs. "Maybe he went towards the cabin?"

"That would be a bit stupid of him, don't you think? To go to where the beast would probably be alone?"

Skye shrugged. "I don't know. He might've." It made her heart race. What if he went after the thing alone?

"Well, we'll see when we get closer."

Skye nods.

They were silent while walking. Skye had more time to overthink.

Lauren... Alex...

It felt unreal. The girl who said hi to her on the first day of school, and the boy who got her to talk. When did this happen?

It happened when they met her.

She didn't know how, but... What if they had never even met Skye? Maybe they would still be alive.

Maybe, she wouldn't even have thought about going to Alaska. A whole bunch of maybes. All the signs pointed to go. All signs pointed to never going on this trip. When Brandon said this wasn't a good idea. When they found the cave. When they found Brandon. All signs pointed to get the hell out of dodge.

Why couldn't she had just left it all alone?

---

The girls make it to the cabin, or at least a mile from the cabin before they see Brandon running out of it, with something sharp. It looked like a knife.

"Hey, look, there he is," Ingrid said, walking a little faster. "Brandon!"

He turned around swiftly, looking for the source of his name and laid eyes on the three girls.

They smiled at him, but he shook his head, waving his hand.

"GO!" he screamed.

Skye stopped Ingrid in her tracks, her eyes wide.

"RUN!" he screamed again. They would have. If only they didn't see the monster running right behind him.

"No... BRANDON! LOOK OUT!" Skye yelled, stepping in front of the other two girls.

He turned around, eyes wide. He gasped, trying to dodge the beast's attacks.

The beast kept trying to claw at him, and roared but Brandon continued to dodge. When Brandon saw an opening, he tried to stab him, but the beast was quicker.

He knocked the knife out of Brandon's hands. Brandon watched as the knife fell to the ground a couple feet away from him. He looked back at the beast and tried to back up. Again, the beast expressed his displeasure and roared. He grabbed Brandon by the head.

"BRANDON!" the girls screamed, and they started running towards him.

Brandon tried to struggle free, but to no avail. The beast effortlessly threw Brandon into the ground and picked him up again like a ragdoll. He held Brandon with both hands, and bended his body. You could hear a snap coming from him. Brandon went limp.

And that scared Skye to death.

"NO!" she screamed, tears already streaming down her eyes. "No..." she said through the sobs, as Ingrid took hold of Skye's hands, and Bree held her waist, because all Skye wanted to do now was topple to the ground.

Two of her best friends, and now her boyfriend.

Seems like knowing Skye is a curse.

Skye calmed down long enough to look up, seeing that the beast was just standing in front of Brandon's body... Looking at them.

As if he was ready for a chase.
