Thirteen Reasons Why

I was inspired to write this poem after reading "Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher. (If you haven't read it yet, then FIND IT AND READ IT! haha) While the book involves suicide, the main message I got from reading it is how our words and our actions affect others. You never know what people around you are going through but by being genuinely kind and considerate towards others, you remind them that someone does care. And you never know, you may actually save someone's life. (This actually happened to me, true story!)
Anyway, enjoy!

The pills will take the pain away
Or so they say

A couple will do
To see me through
To the end of this life
That brought me nothing but strife

Anything to escape the rumours, the lies
The rejection each time I tried
To build a bridge of trust
Only to have it crushed in the dust

Wouldn't it be better if I'm gone?
Will they remember or just move on?

They broke every bit of me
I pushed away silently begging that someone would see
That while part of me had already died, the other had hope
That I wouldn't be found at the end of that rope

I had escaped a broken past
Hoping to start anew
Now it's ghosts were haunting me
déjà vu

At the end of the day
I was to blame
I gave up trying to find a way out
I gave up on me
I gave up pretending to be
Okay

I was not okay
I was broken beyond repair
And no one seemed to care

The choice was mine
And I've made up my mind
That it's 13 goodbyes
That I leave behind

My 13 reasons why
I couldn't stay
Though things didn't have to turn out this way.
