It's the big day. I slip Diablo's leather halter onto him and take him over to the trailer. He loads like a perfect angel. I hop into the truck, completely surrounded by my show clothes. Linda drives off to the show grounds. Ally looks back at me, from the front seat.
"Are you excited?" she asks. I nod, in reply. Linda finds a place to park among the crowded area. I hop out and unload Diablo. I begin to groom him, before putting the saddle pad and saddle on. I change into my show clothes in the tack room of the trailer.
Afterwards, I bridle Diablo and take him out to warm up. I occasionally see beginners who are obviously nervous and a lady who tries to get control over her young gelding. Other than that, everyone blends in.
Diablo spooks at another rider who got way too close to us. I rub his neck to calm him down. After warming up, I trot in to an arena to begin the competition. Diablo stops as I salute to the judge. I also spot Linda watching. I shoot her a smile whilst trotting on. I cut across the idle of the arena, at the trot and repeat this another time.
Diablo gets strong, so I give a pull on the reigns to slow him down. The rest of my routine doesn't go as smoothly as I would've liked, but it went okay. I stop in the center and salute to the judge again, before heading out. Ally and Linda come over to congratulate me for a job well done.
After waiting another six minutes, we get the results. Diablo and I finish at a 73.48% and first place! I hug Diablo. This is even greater than I expected! No matter how rough this journey was with him, I'd do it all again.
