Have you ever heard the silence,
In the warm, fresh country air,
Have you ever experienced,
This thing beyond compare,
The peace, the pure tranquillity,
Of the Norfolk countryside,
The beauty and the splendour,
Of the rolling hills beside.
Enveloped by the warm embrace,
Of a fiery, glaring sun,
There's nothing more magnificent,
When the day is nearly done,
Down comes those rays of light replaced
By a calmer orange hue,
Caressing the fields of barley ripe,
Of corn and wheat fields too.
Then descends the darkness,
The air grows cold and lasts,
From way above the earth comes down
The comforting chorus of stars,
To twinkle in embodiment of ever lasting love,
Of hope, of joy and wonder still,
They shine down from above.
What makes this oh so special,
On my week long Norfolk retreat,
Is the rarity of beauty,
That we do not often meet,
Appreciate and celebrate this mortal phenomenon,
As I fear the more we grow and grow,
It soon will all be gone.
As time, humanity's master,
Ticks on I must depart,
Yet that cottage in the countryside,
Is always in my heart.
