Chapter two
"We need to leave. So we can catch your plane." she said.
I helped her pack our luggage in the navy blue van. This van was so old. She needed a new one, really badly. More like an updated car and not this. I open the sliding van's door and helped Grace and Abby in. We buckled up.
I was nervous. I have never been on a plane by myself. Let alone, I have never been on a plane or that I can remember. Then again, I would be with Grace and Abby.
I was still confused. That talk with the whole family didn't help clarify anything. She probably kept everything on low profile so she wouldn't scare Grace and Abby.
I was still scared about my whole plan. I was afraid that something would go wrong. If someone asked questions that I couldn't answer or explain. My plan was just something I made up. I didn't have any backup plan and so if this plan went down... there was no turning back. They could be on my trail if I went back.
Just thinking about my plan made my palms sweaty.
We walked through the airport doors.
"Hi, I am suppose to get these three girls on the plane to Seattle at noon," she said.
She grabbed the tickets from Abby's hand and gave them to the woman at the desk, who was looking deeply into her computer.
The woman replied, "There seems to be a problem."
My hands became even sweatier by the second and a chill raced down my back.
My step-mother gave the woman an evil eye and then looked at me. Now I was totally scared that something really bad went wrong. It was probably just a mess-up but still when my stepmother is mad... never get in her way.
"What seems to be the problem?" my stepmother asked more politely than what I was expecting.
"That plane went out yesterday."
Step-mother snatched the tickets out of the woman's hand and took us over to the waiting room. We all sat down. Stepmother sighed. A long and heavy sigh. We sat there for about fifteen minutes as she sat there with her eyes closed.
All of a sudden she stood up.
I started to stand up too, but second guessed myself and sat back down.
"I will be right back."
As we sat there, I tried to figure out what she was now saying to the woman. I'm guessing she was asking about another flight out to Seattle.
This time she came back with what it looked like three new tickets and a big, friendly smile on her face. I grinned back at her.
"I have three new tickets for you girls' to go to Seattle late tonight at 9 O' clock. Then again, you girls' won't get there until mid-night or so." she said sounding slightly worried.
I guess that was better than having no ticket at all and another flight without us.
We all took naps in the waiting room until 8:15.
We went through the lines and finally got on the plane. My step-mother was making a big deal that we need to be good for Grandma and do what see says.
"I love you," she whispered to us.
"Mam, it's time for take-off. We are going to have to ask you to get off now." the Pilot said nicely.
"No! No! No! Please! These are my children! They need me."
"Mam, you do not have a legible ticket."
I looked away. Acting as if I didn't know who she was. Only because she was embarrassing me.
When she finally got off the plane, I regretted never looking back at her because that was the last time I ever saw her. The last time anyone saw her. Even for Grace and Abby.
