"[Y/N]?" A soft, familiar voice called.
You looked up to see who it was, and oh, it was him, "Marco?"
You and your ex-boyfriend began dating when you guys were 13 years old. The relationship seemed to be long, romantic, and memorable—well, it was the most romantic relationship you've ever been in. Sadly, you guys had to break up at age 18 because there was no way you two were going to last in a long-distance relationship. Marco dreamed of studying abroad in some other country, and he did. According to his Facebook posts, he seemed to be pretty happy with his college life. You, on the other hand, stayed home and felt the complete opposite. For your life as a college student/adult, you've been juggling on whether you should live your life based on passion or money. Unfortunately, you chose money, and that got you to work under a law firm as of now.
Seven years later, you two are 25. You would have never thought of bumping into your ex at the local coffee shop.
"It's been a while, huh?" He flashed his charming smile, "How have you been doing?"
"I've been doing quite alright... Busy here and there," you chuckled as you looked down and back up, "How about you?"
He motioned his arm to the empty chair sitting across from you, "May I?"
"Oh, yeah! Go ahead."
He filled in that empty spot and sipped on his cup, "While I was studying in New York, I've been assisting teachers... A.K.A., replacing them by getting along with their students," he giggled.
You smiled as you cleaned up the messy files on the table, "That sounds amazing."
"Yeah. I thought I'd come back home to teach the kids here."
You lifted your brows in confusion, "Why would you do that? New York is a lot better compared to this dump."
"I miss it here, that's why. As for you, you look miserable," Marco bluntly said.
You stopped cleaning and looked at him... Who does he think he is? "Wait, what?"
"I can see those bags under your eyes, [Y/N]; you're tired as hell. I can also tell that you drink a large cup of coffee everyday," he propped himself up with his elbows on the table, "Like your job?"
"Boy, do I," you sarcastically replied, "Law school got me endless, restless nights studying for tests and quizzes each week. Now my job got me endless, restless nights working on cases 24/7. But hey, gotta support my family somehow."
Marco then furrowed his brows, "Family?"
"Yeah," you cleared your throat, "my brother's ex-girlfriend died in an accident right after I graduated, so now I have to look after their kid."
"How old's the kid?"
"He's turning 5 this December... His name's Isaac, by the way."
"And where's your brother, Eren? Is he still the same?"
You sighed, "Still the same, alright. As far as I know, Eren's probably out there knocking up some girl right now. Hell, he's 21, and he didn't finish high school. How is he going to take care of the poor boy?"
"Ah, I see... I'm sorry to hear about that. Is the kid doing okay?"
"Yeah, he's happier being with me than his dad. He's actually starting his first day of kindergarten next week!"
"That's amazing," Marco smiled dearly as he looked at you from head-down—well actually, head to waist since both of you were sitting. "Hey, I was thinking: maybe we could get dinner together sometime this week? I know we just saw each other after 7 years, but it'd be nice to actually catch up when the both of us are free, you know?"
A part of you sensed that Marco was interested in you again, "Aw, that'd be great, but I promised the kid that I'll spend the nights watching movies with him. We're watching 'Lady and the Tramp' tonight... Care to join us?" You nervously asked.
"I'd be happy to. Just text me the time and address, and I'll be there. Wait, you still have my number, right?"
"Nope, I had to get a new phone and change my number when I got this job. Gimme your phone."
Before you knew it, you guys exchanged numbers as if you two were 13 again... And you unexpectedly went on an at-home movie date with the kid as the third-wheeler. The kid was very happy that there's company, though; he seemed to like Marco way too much. Throughout the entire movie, Isaac kept asking Marco if he was going to be his teacher. All he could ever reply was, "That's up to [Y/N], aunt, mom, or whatever you call them."
After the movie ended, you washed the dishes in the kitchen by yourself and heard screaming and laughter from the living room. You couldn't help, but to smile as soon as you finished cleaning. You walked in to see Marco lifting the kid high up in the air, running around the room, and then crashing him onto the couch. You rarely had guests over, so it was pleasant seeing your ex and nephew having fun together.
"Alright, that's enough, boys," you said, "Isaac needs to get some shut-eye," you walked towards them to pick the kid up. "And you," you faced Marco, "better get some shut-eye, too."
"Mm, look who's talking," he smirked.
"I want to brush my teeth," Isaac whispered in your ear. You put him down and watched him run to the bathroom.
"Well, that was fun," you said to Marco.
"Yeah, it was," he smiled.
There was a long pause between the two of you until one of you broke the awkward silence.
"I missed you, [Y/N]. I truly do. It's been quite a while since I've been this happy."
"What do you mean?"
"I think about you everyday, wondering how you've been doing and such. I couldn't get over you, you know? But now that I spent time with you, it felt like as if we were young again."
"I'd be lying if I didn't say the same," you crossed your arms as you leaned against the wall and smiled, "It was nice spending time with you, Marco. Never thought I'd actually get to experience that again, huh?" you chuckled.
"Hopefully, we'll experience that together soon. Dinner next week?"
You happily sighed, "We'll see."
He nodded, "I have to get going now. Get some rest, alright? You still look miserable."
"Hey!"
He laughed, "I'm just kidding! Even with those dark circles, you still look beautiful."
"Thank you, you're not so bad yourself," you giggled.
"See you later, [Y/N]."
You opened the door for him, "Bye."
Before he left, he gave you one tight hug. You watched him make his way to his car, and couldn't help but to smile again. You closed the door and found Isaac catching you off guard.
"Is he coming back soon?"
"We'll see."
