A loud bang broke through my thoughts, and I jerked in surprise, tearing my eyes away from the rectangle in the domed roof, a thin sliver of the moon already showing over the wooden edge.
A Yeti stood in the doorway, its fur covered in a fine dusting of snow. It yelled something, incomprehensible as always, but North's head whipped up.
"What do you mean, intruder?"
Another string of garbled speech followed.
North tensed.
"Go sort it out guys." I said, sensing his hesitation to leave when Man in the Moon was about to tell us something. "I'll stay here."
North nodded, uncertainty melting away, and the four of them left. Tooth looked over her shoulder at me, pink gaze worried. The door swung shut behind her, and the latch fell into place with a soft click.
The moon continued to rise, bathing the room in a calming blue light.
As a pool of light formed on the floor, a shadow formed in its depths. It never ceased movement, constantly moving and writhing around itself.
North had always told me that when Pitch appeared in the shadow ten years ago, he was defined, the silhouette of his face sharp and edged. This shadow wasn't like that; smoky and nebulous. Changing forms every moment as though it couldn't decide on its shape, it was sometimes faint like the memory of a butterfly's touch, and sometimes deep and dark, a bold stain of ink on the floor.
In the instant before it vanished, the shadow congealed, and a beam of light formed in the centre, two points on the ends of the oval, an ellipse. A triangle of shadow formed and sliced the disk in two. I stared at it in horror. It was an eye like a lizard's, sharp and angular, boring right into my soul, then it was gone.
As I watched, the scene changed, a dark haired girl moving slowly through some trees and smiling softly at something out of the picture. She turned, sunlight sparking in her eyes, before reaching up to pluck a tiny flower from a branch just above her head, twirling it in her long fingers. Even in the completely blue image shown by the moon, her skin was obviously incredibly pale and smooth.
The image faded and disappeared, leaving me standing alone in a dark room, the moon cut in two by the roof as it slowly vanished and continued its lonely trajectory around the world.
My heart was jumping, and my skin had broken out into goose bumps. I turned to ask North if the visions were always than intense, and realised the room was empty. At that moment, a loud bang echoed from the hallway outside the door.
I ran for the door, remembering the intruder. I flung it open, raced down the corridor, and skidded left around a corner towards North's voice, stopping dead in the middle of the space to gawk at the scene.
"North, let her go."
