Why did I do that?

Of course, I knew why, but finally accepting it doesn't make it any easier. Caring about another person makes me vulnerable, especially as I don't think I'll survive the night.

"Daughter." Kronos welcomed as I passed the invisible barrier keeping the area around him empty. A cool ripple spread across me as I did so, and instinctively I knew that nobody would be able to follow me.

"Once upon a time, in another life." I agreed.

"You could be again. You still have the chance to abandon this foolish alliance and align yourself with the winning team. Leave your doomed romance and save yourself the pain." He made a sweeping gesture in the direction of the battle waging around us.

I half turned to see Tooth being pinned to the ground by at least four of Kronos's creatures, while North and Bunny seemed to be moving in slow motion, both accumulating wounds at a ridiculous rate. Even Sandy, who looked to still be holding his own, looked to be soon overwhelmed by the sheer number of monsters that Kronos had summoned. I didn't dare look at Jack, still safe in my circle of fire. I could feel his eyes scarring a hole in my cheek.

"Any chance of that happening vanished the moment you killed my mother." I stated as calmly as possible, trying to keep the furious shake out of my voice.

"I gave you life! You owe me!" he yelled.

"Yes. You gave me my life. But then you took it away from me. Twice. I owe you nothing. If anything, it's you that owes me a life. Your own." With those final words, I launched fireballs at him, one from each hand. He lifted a hand and they both sputtered out of existence inches from his face.

I wasn't surprised, or impressed. If that had been all it took to defeat him, I would have been sorely disappointed.

"Come on sweetheart! Surely that's not all you've got. I would like to think that I hadn't fathered a weakling."

"You aint seen nothing yet dicko." I smirked, even as a cloud of billowing white grey smoke materialised in front of me.
