RULE NUMBER 2:

       Enclose parenthetic expressions between commas.

Let's simplify.

Parenthetic has to do with Parenthesis.

    Another name for brackets ( ).

Parenthetic expressions, therefore, would mean expressions that are most likely to be placed inside brackets.

       A lot of new writers do this. Or rather don't do this. Watch this first.

I went to the party( even though I didn't have to) to have fun.

Can be written as:

I went to the party, even though I didn't have to, to have fun.

‡  A single sentence has been divided into three parts and can even be made into one sentence by removing one of the three parts.

     I went to the party to have fun.

I went to the party even if I didn't have to.  ‡

    That is by the way though.

In simple words, the rule basically tells you to, "Put words that you'll write in brackets between commas."

       Example:.

Jenny's brother, Kanye West, is a girl.

Jenny's brother (Kayne West) is a girl.

     Example 1 follows the rule. Example two doesn't.

    Also, the comma is used in dates

1 July  1999
Wednesday, November 12, 1989.

      Each of those ways of writing dates is correct.

The first uses the comma to separate the numbers.

    The second uses the word in place of the comma to separate the numbers.

   And the third uses the comma to separate the word from the other word, and the numbers from themselves.
