I don't remember exactly what the personals said when they first told us about The Testing (forgive me my coding is a tad bit fuzzy these days) but I do remember why. They are testing for malfunctions in the code. A flaw in the system. "Since this is the new earth there can be no flaws so don't screw this up Flicker." She says. It made me sad. Water came out of my eyes that night. I was a bit scared as that was foreign to me. But the sensation felt so familiar. Was water coming from your eyes an emotion? I've never seen any of the other Echoes do it, and that frightens me. What if I'm the flaw. I always knew I was a bit different but not different enough to be a Glitch. Glitches are the Echoes who have faulty codes. They tell us that Glitches are dangerous, that they'll ruin everything. I don't wanna be a Glitch! I don't want to ruin everything! My primary personal, Mira, assures me though that I'm not. She's very kind and I love her. No Flicker, love is an emotion. Stop feeling! I hold her in high regards is what I am meant to say. But she really is sweet though. She tells me all kinds of secrets. Ones that I'm not meant to know. She told me that I can never tell or she would be killed. I don't know what 'kill' means but it doesn't sound good so I kept my mouth shut.
We all report to our primary personals before our final briefing. Everything in The Compound is very sterile. Even though Echoes can't get sick they take extra precautions. There are a set of metal double doors with a plate next to it labeled '45C' that's my Asset number. It helps us track who's who in case of an emergency. It's a very smart system actually. I walk through and Mira is waiting patiently for me with a warm smile that seems to be permanently carved into her face. Her ebony hair was up in a tight bun, as was protocol for all personals. "Hello, Flicker." She says. I'm so happy- nope scratch that... I'm thoroughly looking forward to it. Again happiness is an emotion. But it's okay to show emotion around Mira she's my best friend! "Hi Mira!" I say, almost bouncing on the balls of my feet. "I need to talk to about something serious, this isn't chat time right now."
"Oh... Okay then." I say, my smile instantly fading. "They are going to test you on your reaction to the elements. How you handle different climates and such, but you need to remember what I've always told you."
"To be myself?"
"Flicker, this is the one time I'm asking you not to. This whole Testing thing isn't just a test. It's screening for Glitches." I took in a sharp breath at the word 'Glitches'
I stare at her blankly. "You... You think I'm a Glitch?" Her face softens as she gives me a look of sympathy. "Yes I do. It's obvious that you have feelings. Feelings that you shouldn't have. So all I'm asking you to do is lay low and blend in. If they find out about you they WILL deactivate you." Goodness now I'm scared. I don't want to be deactivated because then what happens next? I remember a little about some afterlife thing from my past life but just bits and pieces. Heaven I believe is what it was called. "Why are you helping me? Isn't this your life on the line too?" She sighed. "Yes but I care about you way to much. Primary personals aren't supposed to have a personal relationship with their Assets but I got to attached." She said adjusting my army green top to were there were no wrinkles. We put are arms around each other engaging in what I was told was called 'hugging' "I hold you in high regards Mira."
"It's okay to say love."
