Time. It's such a weird thing, isn't it? It exists, and yet it doesn't, and we base our whole lives off of it. We measure the worth of our existences on how much time we had on Earth and how we used it. We even made things to count time for us, which are quite usefull. It's their cousins that get on my nerves. Damn you, alarm clocks.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
I was brought out of my peaceful sleep by my blaring wake-up call. With my face still buried deep into the pillow, I blindly flopped my arm around until I found the snooze button. Just five more minutes won't hurt, right? Just as I was seconds away from slipping into dreamland the covers were suddenly ripped off me.
"Get up, get up, get up! I will not tolerate you being late to school, young lady," said my older brother, Alex. Without lifting my head from my pillow I made a shooing motion with my hand.
"Go away Alex. Can't you see I'm busy?" My voice was muffled because raising my head was just too much work for this early in the morning.
Alex scoffed. "Busy. Right." A few seconds later I heard his footsteps disappear into the hall. Huh. That was easy. Now, where was I? Ah right, sleep. Before I could even get into a comfortable position, I felt something cold and wet splash against my back. I sat up abruptly, my eyes wide with alarm until I saw Alex, cracking up so hard he was rolling around on the floor, with and empty bucket still clutched in one of his hands.
"Alex! What the hell?!"
"You should have gotten up when I told you to. Now you're going to be late, just look at the time," was his smug reply.
"Whatever. You have no right to treat the birthday girl like this," I huffed, turning my head away so I didn't have to see his annoying face anymore.
"Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that. Happy 18th birthday, Sis." Since it was my 18th, that meant that I would be finding my mate really soon.
"Thanks, Bro," I said dryly. "I hate to break it to you, but your gift-giving skills could use a little work."
"Yeah, yeah. You're lucky you even got one. Now get up."
I glanced at the time. 7:15. Oh shit, Alex was right, I need to hurry. I pushed Alex out of my room and slammed the door behind him. I could hear his faint laughter fade away as he walked down the hall. After jumping in the shower and getting ready, I grabbed my stuff and went to the kitchen. No parents, but that's the usual. It's not their fault I guess, being the beta couple and all, but it would be nice to have them care about their own children once in a while, especially on their birthdays. Plus, Alex is of age to take over the beta position, but, like usual, dad's being greedy and putting himself before his kids. Alex has been training his whole life, and he deserves a shot.
Once in the kitchen, I decided on quick breakfast of yogurt and granola. I was just shutting the fridge door when I saw Alex come up to the island in the middle of the kitchen hiding something behind his back.
"Happy Birthday, Sis," he said, pulling out a cupcake with blue icing and a single lit candle in the middle. "You didn't really think I forgot, did you?"
I laughed and gave him a big hug. "Thanks, Alexander," I said, knowing this would probably be the end of my birthday celebrations at home. I doubt my parents even knew what a big day this was for me. I'm not surprised, though, Alex and I practically raised ourselves. That's why we sometimes act like parents to each other.
"Ugh, Alexander. How many times have I told you not to call me that?"
"Umm... I don't know, maybe only a million and one," I said cheekily.
