Chapter 1

Summers at grandma and grandpa’s are always the best. There’s never a dull moment at their house. From their crazy and pointless fights to their deranged cat always running away. But my favorite part is the little diner they own. Almost all of the customers are local so I know a majority of them. Something about being in the diner is comforting for some reason. The small town they live in is the perfect place to spend your summer. They live in the U.K. so being in a different setting than New York living with my parents is fun.

I’ve been going to grandma and grandpa’s for summer vacation ever since I can remember. Both my parents have full time jobs so there was no one to watch me for the whole day when I was younger. Now that I’m seventeen, I don’t need anybody to watch me but I can’t imagine not going to my grandparent’s house for summer break.

I can already tell that this summer is going to be the best I’ve had in a while. I don’t know why but it just feels like it’ll be great.

“Ashlyn!” My best friend Grace screamed in my face, breaking me out of my daze.

After a lot of begging, my parents finally agreed to let me bring Grace with me to my grandparents for the summer. They weren’t sure if my grandma and grandpa would be okay with having an extra person around but they seemed to be excited for it. They know Grace from when they visit for Christmas every year and thought she’d be great to have around.

“What?” I answered back.

“What are you doing? There’s people over there waiting to be seated!” She practically yelled in my face, pointing to an elderly couple at the door.

“Why can’t you bring them to a table?”

“Because I’m on break.”

“Sure you are.” I scoffed, rolling my eyes.

I went over to the elderly couple leaving Grace behind while she flipped through some celebrity magazine.

Another great thing about having Grace around this summer is that she’ll be able to help around the diner. My grandparents have always made me help out at the small diner but now that I’m older I get to work here all day. It can be kind of fun sometimes but usually it’s pretty quiet around here.

After taking the couples order I brought it to the kitchen for my grandpa to cook. He’s the main chef around here but there’s also Peter and James who work as chefs. Peter is my grandpa’s brother, so he’s my great uncle, and James is his old friend.

“Thanks doll.” Grandpa said taking the piece of paper with the order on it.

“Yup.” I said smiling back at him.

I pushed open the door that leads back into the main part of the diner and brought the customers their drinks, then I joined Grace on the stools in front of the counter.

“Do I really have to wear this apron?” Grace asked for the millionth time as I sat down, pointing to the ugly green aprons we all have to where.

“Yes Grace, you do.”

“But it clashes with my hair.” She complained, flipping her dyed red hair over her shoulder.

“First, it looks fine. And second, I know these aprons are really ugly but it’s not the end of the world. It’s not like you’ll see anyone you know here.”

“Yeah but it’s still ugly.”

“I swear Grace, all you care about is how you look.”

“Whatever.” Grace said as she picked up another magazine and started to look through it.
