RACHEL POV
Why is everything so black? Why can't I see anything? Maybe it's night. Maybe we've just been sucked into a big black hole and-
"Do you want to open your eyes now?" A voice pulls me out of my trance. I realise my eyes are squeezed tightly shut and I cautiously open them. Light floods my vision and I am given just enough time for a flood of embarrassment to course through my body. My cheeks become flushed and I wonder if it's even possible to feel so humiliated.
The first thing I see is Newt's annoyingly amused grin that spreads from ear-to-ear. Arms crossed and looking visibly superior. I feel a sudden urge to wipe that stupid grin off his face. I furrow my eyebrows at him and give him a small shove. He mocks hurt and I roll my eyes at him. Mid-roll Teresa appears from the murky liquid and as quickly as it appeared the grey wall is suddenly no longer and the three of us are left standing there.
I finally have a moment to take in the surroundings around me. It seems we are in some kind of forest. Trees tower above us and sunlight spills from the leaves. The temperature is warm but not humid and the brown dirt that we stand on is slightly damp. The overall scene is beautiful. It's almost too good to be true. I take a deep breath in, taking in the fresh air.
I look over to Newt and Teresa who look like they are having the same reaction I am. I glance around for a second and realise we have to find where the civilisation is. Excitement bubbles up as I think about the mere possibility of seeing Harriet, Sonya and Aris in a matter of minutes but the only question is and always has been:
Where are they?
NEWT'S POV
This is paradise. But to be honest, anything could have been paradise compared to the maze and the scorch. I decide to have a look at what's in the backpack they've given us. So while Teresa and Rachel- or Lizzy now decide to investigate our surroundings I plop down on a fallen tree log and swing the backpack onto my lap.
The backpack itself is a plain grey colour with an unnecessary amount of pockets and zips. I open up the largest pocket, which contains two plain t-shirts, one pair of shorts, a pair of jeans and a hoodie. The next pocket is medium sized and it contains various types of toiletries and two pairs of boxers. On one side of the backpack, a water bottle is strapped on and on the other side a few packeted snacks. I open the front pocket last, it has a small booklet with a picture of the plant that I am supposed to find to cure the flare and a syringe where I'll put the oil of the plant to and inject it on my neck. I hastily zip the pocket back up avoiding the situation for the time being.
Eucalyptus, they call it. Apparently, the plant can only be found in whatever this place is called. Ava tried to explain it to me but I only caught numbs the parasite in your brain, making it ineffective and all of that stuff. To be honest I had my mind caught on the huge needle that she was holding in her hand, the one that is now inside my backpack.
I haul the bag back around my shoulders and push myself off the ground; the girls do seem to be taking a bloody long time.
A cry sounds from a distance away.
