"I never caught your name." I say, sitting in the booth across from the girl.
"Oh, my name is Jennifer." She smiles. "What is yours?"
"Mia." I say.
"I always loved that name." She smiles. "But, I decided to name this little one Jared."
She looks to her large stomach, smiling before looking back up.
"So it's a boy?" I ask and she nods. "How far along are you?"
"Almost 36 weeks." She says.
"Wow, your about ready. When's your due date?"
"Well, I go in tomorrow to see if there's any complications and if we have to move the date, but if not, it would be November 2nd."
Damn, I guess it is October. I still need to figure out what the girls want to be for Halloween so I can go and get their costumes.
"So," She continues. "Do you only have 2 daughters?"
I nod. "Yeah. My husband and I divorced before my 2 daughter, Maddy, was even born. We moved after the divorce, though, so.."
I don't want to lie to her and be like yeah, we haven't seen each other since.
But I don't want to give away my secret, I guess.
"Are you in a relationship now?" She asks.
What should I say? Harry and I went on a date, we had sex.. I know that normal divorced couples don't usually fuck and go on dates.
But..
"I'm single." I laugh.
"Haha, me too!" She laughs.
What? But she said at the mall that her boyfriend was in the military.
"I'm confused." I furrow my eyebrows. "Did you and you're boyfriend break up?"
Her smile drops and looks down to the table.
"Actually. I lied."
Great. What an amazing first impression..
"What do you mean you lied?" I asked.
"I never had a boyfriend.. I went to the club one day, had a few drinks, hooked up with someone. And 6 weeks later, their was a plus sign on the pregnancy test." She says, looking up. "I'm sorry I lied to you. I just didn't want you to never speak to me again. Some of my friends don't talk to me anymore because of it and I just.. I'm sorry."
I give her a smile to let her know that it's fine. "It's alright."
"Thanks." She smiles back, taking a sip of her coffee.
"When's the last time you've been in a relationship?" I ask.
"Um, like a year ago. I was getting over a breakup whenever I went to the bar or whatever.." She says.
I nod, understanding.
I remember the first few months after I got my divorce from Harry. It was like fucking hell.
I didn't want to get rid of him, but I had to. To keep him from hurting both me, Darcy and Maddy. And I wasn't going to have Maddy come into the world where her father was a fucking cheating asshole.
But now he's back and I want him to watch the girls.
What is wrong with me?
"That sucks." I say.
"Yeah, it does." She says. "What about you? Why did you and your ex husband get a divorce?"
"Oh, uh. He cheated on me.." I say.
"Oh, well, I apologize." She says.
"It wasn't your fault." I say.
"Do you want to talk about it?" She asks.
She just wants to know what exactly happened. Half of me wants to yell at her and say that it isn't any of her business and the other half is making words tumble out of my mouth, explaining what happened.
"I was 33.." I start.
~*~*~
I glance to the clock and see that it's nearing 10 til 2. I should probably head back home..
"Wow." She says as we both stand up. "I thought my life was interesting.."
I laugh as we make our way through the doors, her holding the door open for me.
I smile as I walk off the curb and across the parking lot to my car.
"I will text you, I guess." She laughs. "Or see you at work Monday."
I nod, giving her a hug before stepping into my car.
I make it back home just a couple minutes before 2 and notice that Harry's car isn't in the driveway like it was earlier.
Did he leave with the girls.
I walk through the front door, after unlocking it, before glancing around.
"Hello?" I call out and I hear Darcy laughing from the living room.
"Darcy?" I ask, walking towards the room.
"Dad left a note on the fridge." She says, continuing to play Barbies with Maddy.
I furrow my eyebrows as I walk into the kitchen and going to the fridge, seeing a torn piece of paper.
Mia, please don't be mad. I had to leave around 30 minutes prior and I knew I could trust you to get back before 2. I checked all the doors, windows, and if they weren't locked, I locked them. I told Darcy to call either of us if anything happened or if you weren't back by 2:30. My apologies.
I sigh, crumbling the paper before throwing it in the trash. I make my way back into the living room to see the girls still playing with their dolls.
"Did anything happen while you were here, girls?" I ask, standing in the doorway.
"No." Darcy says and Maddy shakes her head as she stares up to me.
"Okay." I say. "So. What do you guys want for dinner?"
