"Mason!" I ran hurried after him. He seemed to ignore me completely as he continued into the kitchen and put the juice in the refrigerator. "Mason!" I squealed again as I hurried around him and jerked open the fridge door.
"Didn't I pour the right juice?"
"No! I mean yes! But don't put the juice in the fridge."
"Why not?" Mason didn't move away from the fridge so I pushed past him to reach the juice.
"Just never mind." Is snapped as I handed him the juice. "Will you put this back were you found it please?"
Mason studied me silently for several seconds. His gaze was intense, I tried my best to meet his eyes and not look away. It was difficult. I could tell he was trying to read me, trying to understand my weird food-stashing obsession. Who knew how long this staring contest would have gone on if my door bell hadn't rung.
"I-I have to get that." I whispered. I could feel myself blushing as his eyes never left mine.
"I'll wait in the living room."
With a small sigh of relieve, I almost ran from the kitchen. I could hear Mason chuckling as I pulled open the door. "Lydia!" I grabbed pulled her into the apartment and into me for a hug. "I've missed you."
Lydia laughed, a sweet tinkling sound. "Honey, you just saw me two days ago."
"I know." I said as I pulled away and closed the door.
"Well." Lydia said as she took off her coat. "I brought that movie you wanted to see."
"Smooch?"
"That's the one. I know you'll just lo-woah!"
I turned around to see what startled Lydia. "Oh. Lydia, this is Mason. Mason, Lydia." I said doing the usual introduction.
Mason stood up from the sofa. "Hey, Lydia. How're you doing?"
Lydia's eyebrows rose clear up to her hairline. "Hi, honey. It's nice to meet you."
Here is the nice thing about Lydia, she's never ashamed to speak her mind. No matter who is around or what the topic is she will speak her mind plainly.
Here is the awful thing about Lydia, she's never ashamed to speak her mind. No matter who is around or what the topic is she will speak her mind plainly.
"Livy, how in the world did you get such a good looking man in your apartment?" She turned and gave Mason another once-over. "He is a nnnniiiiccceee looking man." She chuckled, drawing out the word nice.
My face flushed. "Lydia." I stuttered. "Please don't embarrass me." I whispered.
Mason stood and walked over to Lydia and I. "You're good for my ego." He laughed. "I may keep you around."
My eyes widened in surprise when he leaned down and pressed a kiss to Lydia's cheek.
Lydia's cheeks turned a warm pink. "Oh, Livy. Where did you find this man?"
"I found her." Mason smirked.
"Let's just watch the movie." I muttered, pushing my way around around Mason and sitting down on the couch.
Lydia chuckled. "Well somebody is in a bad mood. Are you staying for the movie, Mason?" She asked as she put the DVD into the player.
"Sure!" Mason said plopping down on the couch beside me. "I've always wanted to see... What was it? Smooch?"
"Yeah."
Lydia grabbed the remote and sat down on the other side of Mason.
"Oohhh. Look at me, in between two beautiful women."
I scowled at Mason but Lydia gave him a swift slap. "Don't get fresh." She advised.
The credits rolled and our movie began.
----
"Thanks for helping with the dishes." I said to Lydia.
"Hey! What about me?" Mason pouted. "I dried."
Lydia rolled her eyes as she buttoned up her coat. "Stop being a baby, Mase."
"You don't like me very much do you?"
Lydia chuckled as she wound the scarf around her neck. "It's not a matter of liking. Now, be a gentleman and walk me to my car.
Mason pulled me in for a hug after he put his coat on. "Thanks for letting me stay, darlin'."
I didn't know what to say so I just nodded and opened the door for them. "Drive safely."
"Bye, dear."
"See ya, Sugar."
I closed the door and started to tidy up my living room.
-----
The door had no sooner closed, then did Lydia turn to Mason. "How do you know Livy?"
Mason raised his brows but answered the question. "I met her coming home from work. She was passed out on the sidewalk."
"Passed out." Lydia's eyes widened in fear. "Oh dear." She muttered. " I thought she finally had that under control."
"Had what under control?"
Lydia narrowed her eyes at me. "What has she told you? Did she mention anything about her health?"
"No, not really. Why should she have?"
"Never mind. But you listen here. My Livy girl has had a rough time of it. I don't need you messing with her mind and heart, you got me? You keep this honest and out front. If I so much as hear a rumor about you and my Livy I guarantee I'll make it so you can't show your pretty face in public. You got that?"
"Wow." Mason gazed in awe at the little spit fire before him. "This is the first time I've been threatened by a lady."
"Trust me, Mason. If you play games with my Livy you won't be seeing a lady. Got it?"
"Yeah. You really don't have anything to worry about, Lydia."
"Good." Lydia opened her car door. "I'll be seeing you around, Mason. You can count on that."
"Oh, I'm sure if that." Mason said with only a touch of sarcasm.
"By the way," Lydia paused. "Do you have a record?"
"No." Mason knew better then to laugh.
"Wife? Kids?"
"No."
"Credit cards?"
"One."
"Well you won't mind if I check up on all that, will you?"
"You're going to do a background check on me?"
Lydia laughed, "It'll be much more extensive then that, buddy boy. Nice meeting you." Closing her door, Mason watched with mixed emotions as she signaled and pulled into traffic. Was she serious?
