I hurried to where he sat and wrapped my arms around him. He didn't resist, he just pressed his face to my shoulder and cried. I could feel his tears wetting my shirt but I didn't care. I held him, humming softly as I ran my fingers through his hair.

I don't know how long we stayed like this before he pulled back. "Thanks for coming, Liv." His voice was husky with emotion.

I sat down on the chair beside him, I turned so I was facing him and took his hand in both of mine. "Mason, tell me about your mom." I said as I rubbed and massaged his hand.

"She didn't look well when I got home. I asked her if she was alright but she said she was fine."

"Not that, Mason. Tell me what she was like when you were growing up."

Mason gave me an odd look. I don't know quite what it meant but he answered my questions. I know it might be strange but I didn't want to hear about his moms condition just yet. He was in the waiting room which meant that she was still alive. He probably wouldn't know much until the doctors got her stabilized. Besides all that, Mason needed a distraction. He needed to think about his mom in a happier light. I figured memories would do that.

"She was the busy kind. Always helping everyone. She loved to bake." He smiled as he pictured his mom in the kitchen, her hair pulled back in a bandanna, a fifties style apron tied around hers waste. "She couldn't cook to save her life. But Liv, she could bake the lightest cake you ever ate. It was like air."

I laughed as I continued to rub his hand between mine. "I've never eaten air before."

Mason smiled wistfully. "You would've liked her cakes, Liv. Dad sure did."

"How did your dad and mom meet?"

Mason started laughing. For a second I was worried that the stress had gotten to him, then I realized it was happy laughter not insane laughter.

"Liv, he fell on her." Still laughing.

"What?" I think I'm missing part of the story here.

"Dad and mom went to the same school but they never talked. She was popular and dad was kind of geeky. You know the story. Anyways, mom was with a bunch of friends at the skating rink, skating was really popular back then. Dad went with his family. He didn't know how to skate. Anyways, he started to lose his balance, her ran right into her, knocked her down then fell on top of her." By this time he was laughing so hard he barely got out the last words.

I was laughing too, the story was just so funny. I could see the whole thing in my mind.

"He got up and apologized as he tried to help her up but then he lost his balance again. Mom was good natured. She laughed and helped him out. She taught him to skate, Liv." He smiled, a bit sadly this time. "They were so in love. Best friends too."

"Sir?" Liv looked up to see doctor in a long white coat. He was holding a clipboard.

Mason stood up, he held Livy's hand squeezing in gently. Liv could see he was shaking. "How is my mom, doc?"

"Come to my office, we need to discuss this."

We followed him to a small room, he gestured for us to be seated. "Mason, your mother has suffered from a hemispheric stroke."

"What is that?" I asked. Doctors think we all understand their medical talk.

"Hemorrhagic stroke is when a blood vessel breaks and leaks because a clot gets stuck in it, or the vessel wall is weak. Blood then flows out of the vessel and into brain tissue."

"H-how is my mom? Will she live?" Mason was squeezing my hand so hard, I squeezed back, not to hurt him but to let him know I was here for him.

"She has no movement on the left side of her body. She has woken up briefly but her speech in not understandable. The good news is, she seems to have retained most of her memory."

"Will she recover from this?"

"If we can regain the blood flow, and under therapy and proper care there is a chance she may recover."

"What's the chance?"

The doctor studied us both for several seconds. Finally he sighed. "20% chance of complete recovery. She may always have problems with the left side. Mason, you better prepare yourself for a long hull."
