Five days. Five days of non stop Mason. He drove me to work every morning. He picked me up every night. He cooked dinner with me and watched movies with me. The man seemed to be a per any part of this apartment. Funny, but when rented the place they didn't say it had a kitchen, a walk in closet and a Mason.
Odd as this may sound though, I grew to like having him around. He wasn't over bearing or annoying. He was kind and fun. It was during those days that I began to realize how much I liked having a friend besides Lydia. Something about Mason made me feel more relaxed. I was happier. And I haven't had an attack since that night on the sidewalk. Hence, I didn't have to worry about telling Mason about my medical condition. If he didn't see it, he didn't have to know about it, right?
Well, that may not be right but that's the way I thought. All that aside, I have been quite happy with my work and my two friends. In fact, tonight we are ordering in for pizza and we're going to make ice cream sundaes topped off with a rousing game of clue. I am really looking forward to it. I glanced at the clock hanging by the register. Four thirty-seven. I stare harder at the clock. If I stare hard enough maybe I can will it to move faster. Come on, five o'clock. Hurry up.
"Ma'am."
Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Tttttiiiiccckkk- ttttttttoooooooooooocccckkk. Time is defiantly slowing down.
"Ma'am?"
Maybe the clocks battery is going dead. Ttttttttiiiiiiiiiiioccckk-
There! Time stopped! It never-
Ttttttttttooooooooooock
Never mind. I guess the tock was just slow in coming. Ahhhh!! Five o'clock is nev-
"Ma'am!!"
I jumped when when a voice practically screamed in my ear. I turned to see a teenage girl standing at the counter looking thoroughly amused. She was fighting back a laugh.
"Can I help you with something?"
The girl continued her giggling as she pushed a stack of romance novels towards me.
I was feeling rather embarrassed after my ignoring her, so I rang out her items in complete silence. What could I say 'I'm sorry I was ignoring you. I was staring at the clock wondering why time was invented at all.' Yeah, I wasn't going to say that so I kept my mouth shut and bagged her books.
She left with her bag of books and I was left alone in the bookshop. Again. I glanced over at the clock. Four forty-two.
Sigh. I grabbed some glass cleaner and a microfiber rag and went outside to clean the windows. Once they were clean I went back inside and cleaned the counter by the register. I looked over at the clock. Four fifty-six. Now we're getting somewhere!
Smiling a bit. I felt more energized as I flipped the sign to closed. Cashed out the register. Counted the money, put it in the safe. Grabbed my coat and purse. Still smiling, I turned off the lights and locked the doors. I turned to see a familiar vehicle parked on the curb. Mason.
He was walking to me, his eyes sparkling and happy. "Come on!" He called as he pulled open the passenger door. "You're gonna freeze and make us late."
I laughed as I skipped towards him. "Thanks for picking me up, Mason."
Mason just smiled down at me. "Get in, darlin'."
I climbed into the car, revealing in the scent that was purely Mason. I felt warm and safe as I buckled my seat belt and looked over to see Mason doing the same thing before starting the car.
"You remember the way to Lydia's?"
"Yup. She had me over for tea the night after we watched Smooch."
"Really?" I can't believe Lydia invited Mason over without me. I hate to say it but I was feeling a little jealous. Mason is very good looking. Lydia is pretty young and still perfectly single. I sighed as a slow unhappy cloud began to take over in my mind. I could see it all now. Lydia and Mason dating. Making googly eyes at each other. Kissing. I would be the third wheel. Being the third wheel didn't bother me as much as the thought of Lydia and Mason marrying. It made me feel physically sick.
I could feel sweat tickling its way down my face. I was too warm. My head started to hurt when I thought about the children they would have. The happy fairy tale life. I should be happy for them! I scolded myself. I love Lydia. She deserves happiness.
But not with Mason. I try to push that thought away. Mason is a good man. He would be perfect for Lydia.
I feel like crying. How am I going to get through tonight when both of my best friends are practically dating?
"Hey! Liv!"
I jerked in surprise as I glance over at Mason. He is parked outside of Lydia's apartment house. I didn't know we had arrived.
"Are you alright, Olivia? You look pale."
I focus on his words and try to forget my thoughts. His words remind me of my thoughts though.
I nod. "Let's go in." I croak. Even my voice sounds bad.
I open the door. The cold wind blows into the car. I hear Mason open his door and get out. He comes around to my side.
Pushing my door closed he slung an arm around my shoulder. "Cheer up, darling. We're going to have a great time tonight."
His words barely register as I focus on the arm around my shoulders. Mason's arm.
Lydia.
Has he has his arm around her. The dating, the kissing, the wedding. The children. They'll call me Aunt Livy.
My head starts to spin. Tears slid unknowingly down my cheeks. I can feel my muscles going weak. Oh, please no! Darkness takes over my mind.
