Making a new friend?

I sat at my chair behind the counter, a book held lovingly in my hands. I love this book. It feels like home. I have such great memories with books, they helped me block out bad times, they took me to happy places, they gave me a reason to find joy in life. A warm satisfying feeling always sweeps over me when I hold an old favorite book.

"Well, at least you're not staring at the clock this time, " a girl giggled.

I glanced up to see a dark haired girl wearing glasses standing at the counter. She looked vaguely familiar but I could remember if I knew her name or not. "I'm sorry. Did you need help with something?" I ask standing up. It's always easier to face people when you're on your feet.

"No. I'm not shopping for books today. It's almost noon, do you eat at noon?"

"I'm sorry?" I sound like a broken record but I can't figure out why this girl is talking to me if she doesn't want to buy books.

She laughed, a soft musical sound. "I'm the one who's sorry. I'm not explaining myself very well. Let me try this again. My name is Lena. I love books and I see you in here everyday. I want to have lunch with you today so I can talk to you. Like get to know you. Like friends. So do you eat lunch at noon?"

I couldn't help laughing. Her words were hurried and almost ran together. It's a miracle I managed to understand her speech. I stood up and grabbed my coat off the rack. "Let's go to lunch, Lena."

"Goody!" Lena clapped happily. "There's a cute little diner not far from here."

Five minutes later we walked into a cute little McDonald's. "This is a cute little diner?" I asked Lena around my giggles.

"Well, if you hadn't eaten for a month you wouldn't be so picky."

"I'm not picky." I said playfully slapping her. "I just expected a cute diner not a McDonald's. Let's order all ready." I said holding the door open for her.

"So you moved here to live with your dad?" I asked as I put another greasy fry in my mouth.

"Yes, my mom didn't really need me around and I've always been closer to my dad anyways. He's the only one who really got me, you know?"

"Sure." Lydia was the only human who ever got me.

Lena smiled as she took a sip of her soft drink. "So tell me about yourself."

I paused. I don't like talking about myself. Every person I meet eventually asks me to talk about myself. Why? Can't we just live in the moment? Is my past necessary to know me? To be my friend. I silently heave a sigh, even as I ask the questions I know the answers. Lena is looking at me expectantly. "Well, to copy your style, my name is Olivia. I live alone in my apartment. I was in foster care for most of my life. I work in a bookstore and I'm not fond of Mc Donald's."

Lena burst out in contagious giggles. "I like you, Olivia. I think we will be good friends." She said when she could finally speak.

I smiled back, though I was really wondering if she would still be my 'good friend' if she knew I was defective as a human. Of course, Mason didn't run from me. Maybe I just didn't give others enough credit. Maybe there are more humans out there like Mason, Lydia, and I.

"So do you want to do something tonight?"

I focused my attention back to Lena. "Like what?"

She grinned. "I was thinking we could go roller skating!"

"Is there a place around here to do that?"

"Sure. In fact, my dad owns it. He'll let us in for free if you want to go."

"I don't know." I frowned as I thought about her idea I feel kinda bad, he lets us in for free while everyone else has to pay."

Lena laughed. "He can't let everyone in for free, Livy."

"I know."

Lena just continued eating while I mulled over this new problem. Maybe I just spend too much time thinking. Maybe I need to just stop. "I'll go with you, Lena. Put I will pay my way in."

"You really are a strange person, Liv."

I sighed, now that is a sentence I've heard a lot.
