I think I put Star into an awkward situation and she doesn't know how to react or respond so I decide to change the subject.
"So. Um. How are your wings from the water? Aren't they not supposed to get wet?" I ask
"Yes. If they get in the water for too long they will have spilt into two parts and they are enable to ever be used again."
"Oh." I say stupidly.
"So... You really did see that monkey?"
"Yes."
"I believe you." Said Star.
"Really?" I ask
"Yes. What are friends for?"
"Wait. Were friends?" I ask
"I think we are... if you want to be."
"But. Mermaids and Fairies aren't supposed to be friends." I say.
"Well I guess it's time we break the rules and be renegades." Said Star.
"I guess it is." I say.
"Isn't your father the king of your country?" I ask.
"Yes. I'm the princess but I always run away from the castle. To many people want to talk to me... That's how the pirates found me and took me hostage. I guess I deserved it." She said digging her face into her knees.
I'm in an awkward situation and don't know what to do. So I do nothing. I just sit there hopelessly. She is sobbing into her legs.
"Do you want to go get some dinner?" I ask trying to change the subject.
"Sure why not?" She said "But where?"
"Think like a fish. What are we surrounded by?" I say.
"Fish!" Added Star.
"Yep! You wouldn't be a bad mermaid yourself for swimming all day for a fairy that's impressive."
"How do you know so much about fairies? I thought you grew up on an island half your life?" She asked.
"I did. But one day my mother came and spoke to me when I was in trouble and told me all sorts of stuff about your people."
"Oh." She said awkwardly. "Cool? I guess."
