'Mom, Dad's scaring the baby again!' Whines my six year old son, Paul.
With a tired sigh I turn my attention to the culprit and narrow my eyes at him. 'So help me God Tate, make that baby cry. I dare you.'
He smiles cheekily and winks at me. 'Relax Wena. She won't cry. Aubree loves the faces I make. Unlike you two.'
And true to his words, Aubree starts laughing at the silly faces her father makes. I couldn't help the smile that formed on my own face. Tate picks up the baby and cradles her gently.
'Please don't drop her, Dad.' Paul says worriedly with wide eyes and Tate gasps ever so dramatically. 'The lack of trust you have in me young man. You hurt me.'
'Not as much as I'll hurt you if you don't listen to Paul and drop that baby.'
Tate and I dated for five solid years. We had to part way's due to our different educational courses and we were able to meet only during holidays. Long distance relationships proved to be a feat, but it wasn't anything we couldn't conquer and in the end, it was all worth it. I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with the moron standing in front of me, even though he could be immature and childish at times.
'Oh by the way honey, Piper and Bennet are coming over for dinner tonight.' Paul started jumping up and down at the mention of his favorite uncle and aunt. Although it took longer than we expected, Piper and Bennet eventually got married. It wasn't like we didn't predict it anyway.
'I can do the cooking if you'd like?'
'You are an angel.' I replied to him and he chuckled, making his way over to me. 'I love you.' I said and smiled up at him as he wrapped an arm around me in a side hug. 'I love you more Ruwena.'
'Make room for me!' Paul said enthusiastically and joined our awkward dining room hug session.
This is what you gave me Aubree. If it wasn't for you, I would have never met Tate. You left me behind, but you didn't leave me alone and for that, I will forever be in your debt. You still are my best friend Bree. That title will always be yours no matter who enters my life and who goes.
You taught me so many things Aubree. You taught me to believe that there will always be good things to come. You taught me to accept the things I couldn't change. You taught me that friendship is powerful and it is eternal. But most of all, you taught me that it's okay if I don't know how to save a life.
As we're huddled in one corner of our dining room, I can finally say that I made it. I finally completed our bucket list, Bree. I found my happiness.
And I hope you found yours.
