My biggest beef with maternity shirts in general are empire waists and rouching. Nothing screams "pregnant" than tiny bows under the bust line, or layers and layers of rouching. I get that rouching is practical, allows for a lot of room to grow and all that, but if you get shirts with good fabric that are long enough and with stretch, you don't need piles of rouching. It just adds bulk and screams "hey I'm pregnant"! Also, I feel its sort of a lazy design solution.
The trick for me was to buy shirts with lots of stretch, and that are LONG. They must be long enough to cover up the fact you don't have a waistband, and so that your skin isn't peeking out. Unless you want to look like Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons.
If you follow the stretch and length rule, you can shop pretty much anywhere. I got great dresses and tops from Anthropologie and GAP, Gilt and H&M (regular). Plus, the flowy style is in now, so that is very easy to wear when you're brewing a baby.
